  • Hi All,

I made myself bankrupt in may 2009. I had two accounts with the halifax. They froze them and yet still send me statements! Anyway, back to the point. I opened a cash card account with barclays the same day as my bankruptcy declaration with no problems, told them i was now a undischarged bankrupt, they said its fine as long as i have not had any dealings with barclays before. Even got a visa debit card.

Go these first as long as you have a clean sheet with them.

Are you sure it's a debit card, as my OH has one of these accounts and he has a CashCard, not a debit card - big difference.

No online access either which is a bind.

Barclays offer a cash card or a "connect" card with their basic account, the connect card is a VISA.

It's a Cashcard account, and Barclays told him no way was he being given a debit card - just a cashcard to get cash out via ATM!

But that was 2 years ago. Will send him off to investigate :)

IIRC it changed from cash card only to this new connect card relatively recently (definitely less than two years ago :)) .. so may well be worth asking them for one now!

    Thanks for that

Now just need online access ......................... Barclays seem to think giving access online poses a security threat in view of his being made bankrupt!

I chose the co-op cashminder account because apparently your online access gets taken away with the Barclays account.

its not just that...one of the many excuses they came out with was "well the online banking system would offer an overdraft and because your bankrupt we cannot overide the computers decision!" something they wont do for a BR

    Hey all,

I declared myself bankrupt in 2004 and was discharged in 2005. I have used a Nationwide basic account since and whilst its very good, I really need a proper current account. I am in good employment and have not had any credit issues since the bankruptcy, however at the same time I haven't had any credit. I haven't been able to find an account that I can open - even Nationwide won't upgrade me!

Are there any options out there? Will I ever be able to get a normal account? Will I ever be able to get some kind of reasonable credit rating?

    Many thanks.

it'll be difficult to find a "normal" account till the bankruptcy drops off your files in 6yrs..one or two have been lucky & obtained accounts with other providers (Natwest were good with me dicharged nearly 3yrs they offered me a full account no questions)...the co operative do a basic account with visa debit card and online banking if that helps??

small things like mobile contracts home shopping etc can make a small difference in credit files...have you had a look at your files to see if everything is as it should be??
