  • i got turned down by natwest today and i am discharged! The lady said her boss told her they no longer accept apps if BR shows in your file. (i was discharged 18m ago) I might try barclays. reason i avoided them is cos barclaycard was one of my debts. I have a co-op but i need another account to keep some self employment stuff seperate to my 'day job' stuff. fingers crossed i will find something somewhere...

VERY strange....all natwest asked of me was a letter from the OR to say i'd been discharged..they applied by paper though as the computer way you would be refused straight away...they processed me for the "step" account and instead they gave a full account (I did query it and they're happy)

i've not had the natwest account that long either....hmm good old consistency strikes again!

People have been opening the Barclays Cash Card Account, even though they have debts with the bank, and they were eligible for the account.

When opening the Barclays account, bring one piece of ID, preferably a passport or driving licence. This counts as both proof of name and address.

phil, I have been all around teh houses about this today. The guy in the branch said its a london thing. the guy on the phone doesn't have a clue and said i should try another branch?!
Main reason for choosing natwest was that i had no prev debts and theya re close to work. I will try another branch and then go for barclays if all else fails. either way, i just want another aco!!!! to keep my finances seprate.

The joys of being a londoner eh? lol

    Hey all,

I declared myself bankrupt in 2004 and was discharged in 2005. I have used a Nationwide basic account since and whilst its very good, I really need a proper current account. I am in good employment and have not had any credit issues since the bankruptcy, however at the same time I haven't had any credit. I haven't been able to find an account that I can open - even Nationwide won't upgrade me!

Are there any options out there? Will I ever be able to get a normal account? Will I ever be able to get some kind of reasonable credit rating?

    Many thanks.

    Hi Swinster,
I had a similar issue with Nationwide, - for 3 years after discharge I was refused an upgrade to full Flex account, apply online every 6 months or so - then one day, it said YES, - and the forms arrived to sign, alsong with an application for their credit card as well. I've now had a full flex account with Visa debit debit for 6 months, and a Nationwide Credit card for 5 months.
I'm hoping the credit card will help rebuild my rating, use it twice a month and clear it every month, - good habit to get into. -
try again with Nationwide - with the Online banking,(which I had from day one of B/rupt) - it's a great account

Once your news of yout BR gets properly beyond branch level the internet banking will be with drawn. Quite a few posters on here have had it happen to them suddenly several months into their BR, with out warning. They say they will reinstate it after discharge.

I was discharged from BR on the 28/10/09 (went BR 15/04/09) Went into BArclays to see if can get online banking and she said no, she has to send it all off to head office, but until off my credit file (6yrs) she does not believe they will give it to me. WHY? What on earth do they think I am going to do with it?. Tis mighty odd.

I'm finding it a bit difficult to open a Co-op Cashminder account
They are telling me that I can not open one if I am 'Self-Employed' or a 'Sole Trader'.
I have, since my bankruptcy, been getting my 'wages' paid into my wife's account, but as I am, now, getting back into self-employment, I really do need my own account, although I will continue to have my ASDA wages paid into my wife's account.
I am tempted by Barclays, but Barclaycard were one of my minor creditors. I have been discharged for over 2 and a half years now - should this make any difference?
I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

Barclays won't give two hoots you owed them. Several people on here who had Barclays as major creditors have got Cash accounts with them, with no problems.

    Really surprised at Co-op though.
