IE keeps popping up while on Firefox?

I always use Firefox, but lately quite often Internet Explorer pops up, like when you get those silly adverts pop up and you have to click the x to delete it and it's quite annoying.

How do I stop it?

  • I would run malware, virus and spyware software if IE is popping up windows randomly. Likley you have an ifestation, you need to cure the problem.

http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=133269 is a guide to sorting it out.

Anti-Virus software won't stop some of the spyware/malware you can get from browsing dodgy sites!

Just because it came free with your PC, doesn't mean it's the best, nor the most complete protection, I'm guessing it's Norton or McAfee... Which often isn't as good as a collection of free scanners.

You need to run some anti-spyware/malware scanners as suggested by shadowdragon.

I'd also suggest these two: Spybot S+D and AdAware Free 2008.

run this, only takes 10 minutes, antivirus will not always detect/remove Spyware

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
    • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
    • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
    • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
      • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
    • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
    • On the Scanner tab:
      • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
      • Then click on the Scan button.
    • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
    • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
    • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
    • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
    • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
    • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

Your not an idiot at all, you just dont know how to do something, and the best way to gain knowledge is to ask questions. The fact you solved the problem is in its self an achievement. And next time you come accross someone with popup problems you will be able to advise them in how to solve the problems.

Im just transfering stuff from my missuses pc to a better PC i just picked up for her, theres a number of ways to do it, I have my own way, more time consuming doing it via a usb memory stick but its how i prefer to do it, rather than accross the network or cds or using a backup application. I feel more in control of the process doing it this way. Im sure many would agree that its probably the most inefficent way of doing it. But is how I do it.

    I didn't understand this bit

Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

    What happens now?
  • once you have ran Malware bytes it produces a log file that opens in notepad, highlight it and select copy. then in the new post box hit Pase to put it in here then people can look at it and see if theres any problems or not.
