nadnad is right, you can mix food with cows milk but it shouldn't be used as the main milk drink because babies still get all their nutrition from milk before 12 months... If you're planning on leaving weaning until 6 months then you might not need to bother mixing baby rice etc... Just start with the same food as everyone else is having! ;)

Nice to see you feely, how are you getting on?

3onitsway - you can use cows milk for food preparation from 6 months, but not as a main drink - for that you wait til 12 months. I assume thats what the HV was trying (badly) to explain.

Thank you :D Why didn't she say it like that - simples ;)!

(If you fancy a new career as a HV - we desperately need one that talks in simple sentences - rather than never ending groundhog day conversations!!)

I'm still at my Mums, tried going home but couldn't manage without the support. Anti-depressants should kick in soon. Hopefully will go home on Sunday for a few days.

Toby is doing great, but still won't latch on. I'm expressing, which is hard work on the days when he wants 100ml every 90 minutes!

Hoping if I carry on expressing and trying him with breastfeeding, he'll get it. My Mum knew awoman who had a baby who wouldn't latch on, but at 6 weeks he suddenly got it. Fingers crossed - expressing is bloomin' hard work.

Thanks! I don't think we'll wait as long as 6 months - she's very interested in watching us eat now - she sits there drooling! :o

Krystal - while you're here - i had a strange conversation with my HV yesterday!
She was asking if i was still b/f - Yes.
She talked about weaning from 6 months, and asked if I had a pump, to get milk to mix in baby rice etc - Yes.
Then she said if I had trouble expressing (i don't), i can mix with cows milk or formula.
Then said babys can't have cows milk til 12 months.
So I said, so from 6 months, I would have to mix food with expressed or formula.
She said ' yes - or cows milk'!?!

!!!!!!! I don't have much confidence with this HV anyway - we've had some bizarre conversations before!

It made me wonder - What (if any) qualifications do HV's have?
Cow's milk is supposed to be okay in cooking because you're only using small amounts whereas for the main milk drink it should still be breastmilk or formula because cow's milk doesn't have enough of all the right nutrients.

    I believe a HV is a nurse.

Feeling, this lady expressed for about five weeks before her baby latched on and ended up feeding for over 2 years.
