Hi gain mean that you are miles from a transmitter and that you need a large outside multi element aerial and that an indoor aerial is unlikely to work due to a weak signal.

Is your house mate using a portable aerial?

yes, they all do apart from one...

What sort of picture does he/she get?
not brillant ... but others in the same house do
Is their picture a freeview picture or is it analogue (BBC1, BBC2, ITV, channel 4 and channel 5 only)?
1,2,3,4; though im not sure about others...

Is your flatmates TV on the same side of the house as yours and on the same floor?

    same side....

Should not need a high gain aerial for Preston area, you are only approx. 10 miles from Winter Hill transmitter, check you have the connections right and try retuning the TV and freeview box.

I hope so ... I think Ive done that ... I keep searching for channels and I get nothing, I cant see a way the connections can go any other way...

OK, forget the freeview box for now, unplug the scart leads so it is disconnected from the TV and plug the aerial directly in to the TV aerial socket and see if you get any analogue channels, if necessary try retuning the TV.

A weak analogue signal will still give you an acceptable picture while a weak freeview signal will give you no picture at all.

    LOL :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

But how do I get around the problem? Surely, I'm not the only one to have this problem?!?!

  • I so cant do that!!! This is a rented property and I only have a room in it...

I'm so sick of my housemates coming home in the middle of me watching a programme.

  • Metal coat hanger, unwrap it, stick one end into the centre thing on the TV, and the other end elsewhere.

Of course when unplugged / switched off.

This will give you 'normal' tv channels until you can source a powerful indoor digital aerial.

OK, let’s get back to basics. Coat hangers, indoor aerials etc are only going to be fine for freeview if you live close to a high powered transmitter. 10 miles is not close but if you want to try setting the freeview box up do the following.

Plug a scart lead into the freeview box and the other end into the TV. If the freeview box has more than one scart read the manual and use the one that is reserved for the TV.

Plug the aerial lead into the freeview box.

Via the freeview remote press the menu button. You should see this on the TV regardless of any freeview TV signal. If you don't see the menu select AV1, AV2 on the TV's remote which should pick up the scart connection. This might be marked up as Aux on the TV remote. Via the freeview menu find the search option. Do a scan. You will see the box searching for channels. The box will eventually tell you how many it has found.

If the box tells you it has found nothing or what it does find breaks up on your TV you will have no choice but to get a new outdoor aerial.

which area of preston are you in?

I was living there in about 2002 while at uni, was on hartington road and I used a tv with an inside aerieal thing (didnt have an aerial socket in my room) and a cheap booster - both bought from argos. Didnt bother bout freeview then:D
