Strange! I'm sure there was a question about Tesco! Anyway, Tesco Personal Finance Ltd is a joint venture between Tesco and RBS, and has it's own FSA registration number...greyskittles wrote: »What does it mean if the bank is white? Is it that they are independently registered with the FSCS so you get the full £35K protection for that bank? Sorry if it's really obvious

^^Thanks - that's what I hoped.
There was a question about Tesco but I edited my post (bad habit!

Can anyone tell me about Sainsbury's Bank - on Martin's list it is in white which csuggests it is not owned by anyone, but on the BBC website there is alist that it belongs to either Halifax/Lloyds. Is it safe to have £35k in both Sainsbury's and/or Halifax/Lloyds.0

I'd say your safe - Sainsburys Bank plc is a member of the FSA in it's own right. Their register no is 184514 - check it at the FSA web site:

The link to Halifax is their home insurance - it's underwritten by them.0 -
The banking landscape is becoming a little more confusing everyday with merger and acquisitions, and this is likely to continue going forwards. Whether anything is actually done about it or not, is anyones guess, but John McFall chair of the Treasury Select Committee is pushing for a much simpler cover.

It's a little more than just the insurance underwriting, HBOS also provide their transfer network, if you view the security certificate of their secure online site it belongs to HBOS, but you are quite right for compensation purposes they are a separate entityI'd say your safe - Sainsburys Bank plc is a member of the FSA in it's own right.
