Best family car that doesn't cost a fortune to run?

A little bit expensive for me, and all BMW drivers are !!!!!! on the road :P
Just done an insurance quote. The Micra would cost £371.31 per year to insure right now for a year.
The 1.9 TDI Trendline Passat (100BHP) would cost £561.72
So a difference, but hardly surprising.
Oh go on. Buy a 5-series and become an !!!!!!. You're 1/2 way there already with your previous statement. :rolleyes:0 -
Chris, the problem is, we do need to get away from driving pleasure, into driving utility, which, to generalise, must aim us at Japanese cars. All those years ago the MG Maestro I owned was probably the most fun car I've owned. The Focus which came later was lovely to drive, as is my current Audi A2 sport. (The latter is a little like a go kart, on poor road surfaces!)
Just get something for the A to B journey, that shouldn't break down.0 -
It's a bit misleading though, because Skoda dont technically do a 2.0 diesel except in only the new models, so to list only the 105bhp TDi as the only 1.9 is not the only ones you will get on the market.
They seem to list the 140bhp as 2.0, but it's only 1968cc and classed 1.9 by VAG. So to make it a fairer comparison, check out these stats.

It's not mis-leading, you said,
"2.2 surely means insurance and road tax would be higher? The VAG diesel engines are similar output from a 1.9. Correct me if im wrong, im only guessing!"
I only used the engine that you suggested, the 1.9. But I'm happy to go with the 2.0, as now you're in the same insurance group as the Civic, the same tax group as the Civic, your combined mpg is now about 10% worse than the Civic, your CO2 levels have gone from 5 below the Honda to 10 above, and,
0-60MPH
Skoda 140 Horses 9.8 secs
Honda 140 Horses 8.6 secs
Plus I believe you're now more expensive, but I haven't got time to exactly match up specs to go through it in detail.0 -
:rotfl: good work! I was suggesting that the link you gave was misleading as it's a 1.9 not 2.0 so the inof may be incorrect too?!:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. Ti, go check the facts, you know the Civic, is a pocket rocket, it'll kick the Octavia in to touch whatever engine you drop in it and is bullet proof as far as reliability goes. VAG make some nice cars, but the Skoda isn't going to beat the Civic any day of the week.

Chris, would the Nissan Note be too small for you?0

Touche. I think it's a case of honours even over all though, as the Skoda would be cheaper than the Civic (£8500ish for 3yr old Civic, around £6500 for the Skoda) and i'd expect a better car for £2000 moreTi, go check the facts, you know the Civic, is a pocket rocket, it'll kick the Octavia in to touch whatever engine you drop in it and is bullet proof as far as reliability goes. I looked at that, the missus would like it because she doesn't like big saloon/estate type cars, but I feel it is too small really.David_Aston wrote: »Chris, would the Nissan Note be too small for you?0 -

And you would get a better car for the extra £2,000, the Civic.
But it isn't £2,000, Skoda is from just under £7K on a 55 plate with 55K and the Honda is about £800 more, on 06 plate with 30K, to Skoda 9K on a 05 plate with 46K against the Honda for 9K on 06 plate with 54K.
