We moved up from a Clio for the same reson and decided on a Focus and were very happy. We had a 1.6 Zetec and it was cheap to run, cheap to insure and cheap to tax. We had it for 5 years and only spent money on MOT/Servicing and the usual stuff such as brakes and tyres.

X and 51 are both Mk4 so guess it could be coil pack related, but H and F reg is 20years old, you can hardly complain at something going wrong at that old?! ;) Still not common faults though, must've just been driven hard or not maintained well.

I think Ford do good ones as often as VW do bad ones ;) :rotfl:

Don't worry I don't bow down at the alter of the blue oval or anything. :D

I just thought I'd share my experience of a similar situation-for the record though, of the five people I know that have a Focus all are happy with it and haven't had to shell out a load on repairs. (In the interests of impartiality I have one friend who's 03 Fiesta is a crock of **** and know two people who love their VW's)
  • had my focus from new almost 5 years old and been great so far,i think the focus is easily the best model ford have ever made reliability wise, the amout of them that are available and you rarely hear a bad word about them.
my mate had the early focus, his got to 100,000 miles and then he sold it,its still going strong, mine is the last of the old shape.
my parents have the new shape focus which does have a bigger boot than the old one so this will suit you better, again they are happy with it.
    ...work permit granted!
  • Chris, go to the Whatcar site. Look for the reliability lists, jd power or What cars own list. Then buy whichever one you fancy. I don't think VW do particularly well to be honest.
