If you have a coal fire, you could hold the ring in the smoke - silver will tarnish; gold won't. Take the ring from the smoke after a few minutes; soot will rub off, but if it's silver, the tarnish (silver sulphide, as you ask) won't - you'll need silver dip.
Coal contains sulphur, and as it burns this makes sulphur dioxide which will tarnish the ring quickly.
Maybe not what you're after, but the best I could come up with, other than a jeweller :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Not that this information gets us any further forward, because I'm no more a physicist than a chemist or a mathematician, but I thought I should mention it.
So, back to the chemistry, in the absence of a coal fire would a candle have a similar effect, albeit on a smaller scale? And do we have a cover story for why she is trying to [STRIKE]set fire to[/STRIKE] tarnish her shiny new ring?
Maybe the jeweller is simpler. A lot less fun of course ... :rotfl:Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
OK, DH has just told me that technically, I am absolutely right. However, in practice, when Archimedes had his Eureka moment he was working with a crown (for someone's head), rather than a ring (for someone's finger). Apart from the difficulty of knowing / calculating how much water a ring made of a particular metal should displace, he doubts that you have in your kitchen scales or measuring jugs of sufficient sensitivity to make the experiment practicable.
Next year, you need a tiara. :rotfl:Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
You guys have made me laugh so much!!! hehe!
I really should get all my rings valued, for insurance purposies of course!! So I'll go to the jewellers, I think!! I do actually think it is white gold, after searching round the net etc. And OH said last night that he'll have to buy me more 'white gold' stuff to match it!!! haha!Made it - 15 years married!! Finally!! xx:beer:0 -
Look inside the ring for where the hallmark should be. IF you see the word 'silver' or the number '925' then that's usually proof that it's silver. I haven't a cloo about proper reading of hallmarks, but I do know that 925 is silver.0

The only worry for me would be if they turned out to be VERY valuable I'd be scared to wear them. But I think I'm safe.DH and I have modest tastes. :rotfl:
