  • Hi!

I was just about to start dinner and found that part of my steamer is missing. It's the circular plastic bit which goes in the bottom where the water is and it goes round the heating thing.

Does anyone know if it is safe to use without it?
    Thankyou!

    Sorry if it's a stupid question:rotfl: :o

How many servings should I be getting from 500g of mince if I bulk it out? I made chilli con carne with kidney beans and chick peas (per Jamie Oliver!) and put some lentils in too and I've got 9 servings....is that good or not?

I can dream! Lol, I haven't tried this bulking out yet, but I'd normally get three servings from 500g mince :o
  • :j :j Panic over!

I have just found it lurking in the cutlery drawer, no idea why I put it there:rotfl:

Lol, and for future reference (and my past experience) the steamer doesn't work without it!

I'd say that was excellent: my rough'n'ready guide to quantities is

    4 oz meat without bones
    6 oz meat with bones
    2 oz frozen veg
3-4 oz pasta (but mine are greedy for pasta)

500g is a bit more than 1lb, but I'd use a whole packet that size for four or five of us if I wasn't bulking it out.

However I'd never bother cooking double quantities and expecting it to last. If there's food left in the pan, the boys think it's fair game!

I think 9 servings is brilliant! Well done!

I bought 2 packs of 500g yesterday and opened both packs so i could make make 3 lots of mince instead of the two and then i froze all 3 lots. I think supermarkets think they can fool us into thinking that because a pack may have 500g, we should use the whole lot in a meal. Well that's fine if there are a lot of mouths to feed, but it isn't necessary for smaller families.

My 3 lots of mince will feed the 3 of us 3 times so in other words, i will be getting 9 portions out of 2 packs of mince...and i thought I was doing good at that, but you've got twice as much out of your mince!

I never look at those dates when I eat mine, so I'm sure it's sometimes FAR older than that, and it's always been fine. Absolutely fine.

Going back to the mince, I did recently find about half an ounce of mince carefully preserved in a bag in the freezer. I asked DS3 if he could explain it, and he'd left it. He'd given himself a generous portion and thought I'd be cross if he ate it all. I'm not sure what use he thought what he'd left would be.

Well my chilli is now in the freezer - I made small portions but I live alone so there's only me to feed - I used to find that feeding a male of the species always took huge amounts!

Thanks everyone, really wasn't sure if I should be making it go further than that.
