Blue Elephant, guess it'll be used/thrown by now anyway but for future reference... if it's got meat in I would personally only store in fridge for 48 hours and another 24 if it hadn't.
Rice salad I wouldn't do myself because have had food poisoning from it before so I always heat lo rice till piping piping hot.

    question from me now:

I want to make a draught excluder, I have some old jeans that I can use for the body - for the stuffing, would scrunched up plastic bags work?
I have far more than I could use for rubbish and storing them is a nightmare.. might put a drawstring on the one end in case I need one in a hurry!!
Trying very hard to be frugal and OS - just plodding on and doing my best!

If the bags are well packed in I don't see why not.

Coo - double purpose draught excluders... magic :)

They'd work as a stuffing, but probably not substantial enough as a draught excluder, you really need a bit of weight to it. Do you also have any old tights/t-shirts you could stuff some of the bags with?

  • Hi everyone, about to checkout with an online order ......

Fancy making my 1st soup of the year now it's getting colder and wondering if anyone can recommend potatoes to use?

I gave up last year as the ones I had kept disintegrating:mad: (probably as I buy the cheapest ones and only use for mash/roasting).

    Would salad potatoes do?

    Thanks:)

Are you looking to make soup with chunks in it? Use something like Charlotte, then.

Otherwise just whizz the whole lot in the blender and there is no problem.

:T:T:T Good find! I need disintigrating ones for my leek and potato soup but mine didn't break up...

Can you remember which ones disintergrated? I'm afraid I can't remember which ones didn't although I actually think I tried baking potatoes thinking they would disintergrate but they didn't...
  • Thanks RAS, yup, I like "chunky" soup rather than blended up.

Just checked the price of Charlottes  £1.40 for a 1kg bag (also have a bag of my "usual" ones in which are only 40p/kg) - it had better be good!;)

Now.... I need to find the freezing thread so I can see if I can freeze what's left of them to use in other soups:)

basicaly any waxy/salad potato will work, just I can remember Charlotte are very waxy.

the other option is that you cook the rest of the soup until ready and then only add the potatoes at the end, giving them just enough time to cook before serving.

Frugal I usually just buy basic white potatoes and have no problems with them turning to mush at all!

Sorry link won't work - give me a sec!

    Hopefully this one will http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=259408317

All the sm seem to have their own version of these and in different sized bags (they keep well in the fridge:)) - actually quite impressed as I'm doing a Sainsbobs order just now (have a voucher;)) and they are cheaper than the ones at Mr As:).
