Haven't bought garlic bulbs for years, we were always using a clove or two and throwing the rest away. Now always buy the 'lazy garlic'. I think it has a fairly short use by date on the jar once opened, but we ignore it and use it over a couple of months - kept in the fridge.

I do grate onion for sage and onion stuffing - but only use half the onion! for some reason grating them seems to make them stronger! but it does solve the problem of the onion not being chopped fine enough!
for garlic I bought a garlic press - and dont use it! to much faff to clean! I just put the knife blade on the garlic and bash it with my other hand!

Avoid chopping up the root of the onion until the end - that will save a few tears. Chopping onion underwater also works but there is always the danger of the knife slipping.

Fresh garlic cloves store for a long time in a small bottle of olive oil with the added bonus of garlic flavoured oil to use.

This may seem a silly question :o but I'm not sure of the answer, so I'll ask anyway:

If I put frozen mixed berries in the bottom of a glass bowl and covered with jelly (same as you would when you make a trifle) would that help the frozen fruit retain it's shape? Would it remain frozen? Would the jelly set?

I'm just wanting to make a simple mixed frozen berry jelly, but I hate how limp frozen berries go, so was wondering if using them from frozen would prevent that stage....but then I also wondered, would they simply not thaw at all suspended in jelly? Or even prevent the jelly from setting?

Also, I know fresh pineapple prevents jelly from setting, and that tinned doesn't, but does anyone know what the score is with frozen pineapple?

Just be careful of the possibility of botulism :) which is discussed in this thread - flavoured oils

scrape it off gently with your fingernail / plastic or wooden spatula, then squeeze on some washing up liquid and wipe with a very hot cloth?

Well, I never knew that about pineapple, so it's not silly at all.

And I don't know if the fruit would retain its shape, BUT it would both defrost and help the jelly set quicker, as far as my limited memory of physics experiments goes ...

I also remember that if Mum had forgotten to make the jelly in time, she would melt the jelly cubes in as little boiling water as she could get away with, and then add ice cubes to cool it and set it quickly. Of course, she had to stir vigorously to melt the ice cubes, because otherwise you might have had lumps of jelly around lumps of water, but the ice cubes would definitely have melted eventually.

BTW, if you have a child with an enquiring mind, this would be a most entertaining experiment, so if you don't but someone else does, maybe we could have the results! :rotfl:
