It's weird because I would have thought if it contained meat, it would need to be a use by? Very strange. I did a google and it didn't come up with anything!
It's not that - it's the fact the use by dates (think it says use by ) are like two odd weeks ahead and they are fridge stored - so I assumed they were adding preservatives.

Sorry my pizza reply didn't make a lot of sense - must not talk on phone and type at same time!:o

I thought they were meant to have a full ingredient list on anyway, but I would ask them about the use by dates ...

I think they do but I will check. Not that I've ever bought them, and I guess it's not really relevant - however their dishes last more than your average portion of stew etc in the fridge, so it did make me wonder if they were using preservatives (which they must b e really ) Sorry if it seems a daft questoin.

i can't imagine salt would prolong the shelf life of a HM ready meal by two weeks though. I'll have to ask next time I'm in getting FR eggs :D It's kind of annoying me !

    Hello all,

Just checking that what I intend to do is okay, I'm sure it is, I just want to get it straight in my mind.

For tea tonight I was going to make a receipe, chicken, potatoe layer bake with white sauce.

It calls for already cooked chicken, which I did last night and kept in the fridge, situation has changed and I can't make it for tea but intend to make it tonight. (time is the factor tonight, it takes 1½hrs in the oven)

It serves six and I was going to portion it up into meals for the two of us and freeze.

So its cooked one and froze once.

Now I intend to keep two cooked portions back in the fridge and re-heat for us tomorrow and not freeze these two.

When I re-heat I mean gas mark 6 for 30 mins, that seems to suit most things I re-heat and they are all piping hot (lasagna etc)

Thats okay isn't it? The only difference from normal is the two portions for tomorrow will not have been frozen in between.

    Hi Linda

I am a bit confused - the portions you are keeping back or freezing - are they going to be cooked in the oven before putting to the side? It's just that would mean your chicken was cooked yesterday, today in the pie, and then when reheated up - so that would be the chicken cooking 3 times (whether or not they have been frozen again )

I try to avoid cooking chicken so many times, so personally I would prepare the bake but only cook the portions you need (and freeze or fridge the rest if that makes sense).

That must have been where my doubt came from, not a good idea is it.

I know what I'll do, the chicken I've already cooked, just portion it up into much smaller portions and when I'm ready make one smaller bake or whatever to eat all at once.

So that way it will be cooked once from raw, and cooked once from cooked, that the correct way isn't it?

This cooked chicken will be okay until tomorrow tea won't it? thats no different to cold cuts the day after boxing day :D

Don't get me wrong, some people would do that no problem! I would try to avoid it though.

You could always prep the pie and freeze so it is ready to be cooked (and you don't have to cook the chicken again to prep the pie) . Yes, or freeze the chicken in portions :)

Theres is a thread - how long does cooked chicken keep for? I aim for 3 days and would still freeze it on the 3rd day. If it's ok to eat imo, it's ok to freeze :)

Another chicken question here! We had a roast for dinner today and normally strip the carcass and freeze it if not using it up straight away. I'd like to make a pie with it tomorrow, and freeze it - will this be OK to reheat?

    Thanks

    too many comps..not enough time!
