    Hello Ollie

Yes, there is a difference. Fairy cakes are small sponge cakes, made with butter, sugar, flour and eggs mixed together, while muffins are made by mixing flour, sugar and baking powder, then folding in the wet ingredients - milk, melted butter and eggs, usually. Fairy cakes tend to be light and fluffy, while muffins are denser and chewier (and usually bigger, but not always - you can get mini muffins, after all).

    I want cake now... :)

Many thanks for that CCP - I knew there HAD to be a difference but wasn't sure what exactly it was .

Will now be the next thing on the baking-experiment list :T.

I recommend getting from a charity shop/freecycle/carboot/jumblesale, an old copy of the Good Housekeeping cookery book.

It explains the different types of cake baking. Some you "rub in" like when making pastry, some you fold in, etc.
  • Please could someone tell me how to stop the dye coming out of my dark blue jeans. I've had them a few months and they have been washed a fair amount of times but are still leaving stains on my hands whenever I wear them. Luckily we have a dark brown leather sofa so no stains on it!

Thanks for the answer. The reason I have asked is OH is diabetic.
Now this is obviously NOT medical advice, but my understanding was that current advice is that by paying a lot of attention to the Glycaemic Index of foods, diabetics can worry less about sugar. Also using syrups isn't necessarily going to help with reducing the sugar load.

The Diabetes UK site is also very helpful particularly to the newly diagnosed, & updates the information regularly.
And this is good advice, because a dedicated diabetic site is definitely going to be a 'safer' place to get any advice from than us.

Also, livalot, it may be possible for your DH to be referred to a dietician if you need more help with controlling it through diet.

My MIL finds that FIL's blood sugars go silly if he can't get regular exercise too, I don't know if that's something you've noticed. Bad weather, feeling unwell, not able to go out for a walk every day or get out into the garden, and it's a real struggle.

Adding a handful of salt to the wash may help - are they running into clothes in the wash as well? There are also special dyecatching products on the market too but I'm not sure if they would help at all.

Against my better judgement OH froze some leftover seafood risotto (I know, I know but I've got him into the habit of doubling up reciepes for the freezer!)

I chilled and froze it quickly but what's the safest way to defrost and reheat thoroughly?

    Thanks :o

I would defrost it overnight in the fridge . Rush defrosting it can cause more risk of germs etc. I would also not rush freezing it. Make sure its completely cool before going in the freezer.

I am not a big fish or rice eater - but would say microwave would be safe , just check it's piping hot throughout

let us know how you get on!:D

Here's some freezing guideline stuff from food standards agency and more info

Could you tell me if TEA TREE OIL is an effective fly repellent please? I know Citronella is the better choice, but it makes me sneeze something chronic :o For that reason, I'm loathe to spend out for things like grapefruit or orange oils, so any advice would be most welcome....
