I have lurked on this thread for a while, but have had depression and for quite a long whiile couldn't even bear to read it because my house is such a tip and I couldn't be bothered to do anything about it. But I feel a bit better now and am going to try to make some money and clear the clutter by selling some of my many, many, far too many books. They range from cheap and trashy thrillers to heavy academic books - can anyone on here tell me where the best place to sell them is ? I assumed Amazon was, but is it ? Might I be better selling the novels etc through Amazon and the adacemic stuff through Abebooks, or even perhaps a book dealer? You see it's all too complicated - no wonder I can't be bothered, but I have a bit of energy now and really want to try......

I would suggest just listing a few for sale at a time so you don't become overwhelmed and demotivated and stressed about it..

Personally I wouldn't use amazon.. you do not get anything to cover postage, their fees are huge and you end up losing money. I have sold books on ebay for a reasonable amount. There was a place mentioned on the flylady tread a whie back about a great place to buy/sell used books... I'll go ask and edit it into here for you in a second

Academic books may go well at the end of summer when the new student inake are organised and looking for specific books.. (I'm doing bio med in Sept so if they may be useful you may have a buyer right here! :p )

Well done for finally making the decision to clear some space! It is very rewarding

Thankyou so much Pigpen, Greenmetropolis looks good for a lot of the books, and I think you are right about just doing a few. I'm afraid they're all Eng Lit so probably no good for bio med. I've been a bit scared of selling on e bay, but I know that's silly so I think I'll try to do that. Then think how motivated I'll feel if I succeed !
    many thanks,

Hi morganlefay, welcome to the great declutterr. its adictive, great fun and purposeful. I echo Pigpen, just list a few books. there isnt a right or wrong place to sell. Just pick one of the options and go with it. Do keep us updated about how you are doing, how many listed and sold. Personally I dont list more than 5 things at a time when I'm selling as I get confused otherwise. If things dont sell after a month I put in a box and when theres a few items in there i either freecycle or give to a charity shop.
Best Wishes with the decluttering and dont forget to post your progress

Am well and truly back on the decluttering band wagon.

OH and I have cleared out the side lean-to utility area and managed to get rid of:

A carful of rubbish to dump
    Steam Floor Cleaner to freecycler
    Cool Box to freecycler
    old back door to freecycler
    Curtain Rails to freecycler
    Stainless steel bin to freecycler

We can now get the new gas BBQ into the lean-to and can walk through minus the obstacle course now!

Plus, have also found a home at last for the old sofa bed to a freecycler (after two others let me down!) - thus freeing up space for my new industrial sewing machine.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D
