Oh I remember those fondly!!! ;) I had such a craving for them when I was pregnant in Zim. It upseted my ex greatly, having to try to find them at random times of the day.:rotfl:

I could never get an explaination from him about polenta V maisemeal.

Don't know about Zim, but it's not always easy to find them in Swaziland because the people selling them aren't necessarily at the same place each day - or may not have any to sell some days! Also in Swaziland when it's harvest time they are not allowed to sell them until the King has had the first of the harvest - which can be a bit annoying when you are desperate for a roast mealie. Better than boiled ones.
  • Hi All,
I've come out of lurkdom (after taking about a month to read the whole of the original USDA thread, and parts one and two of this thread!!) to ask a quick question - I have made the coconut cake and weetabix loaf this afternoon - got 12 slices from each for my pack ups. Can the slices be frozen? Otherwise I fear they may not make it to work as they are so delish!
    Thanks in advance.
    Yasmin
PS - I find this thread SO inspirational, so thank you Weezl, and thank you everyone else who contributes!

  • HEY GUYS,

Ive been a bit of a lurker to these boards but have posted a few ideas.......u guys are very inspiring. no where near the 50p per day but trying, defo cut my shopping budget right down thanks to the help of these threads.

as ive stated b4, i think, im employed at Mr A but until recently never really noticed the joy of the whoopsie, sounds crazy but never relaised u could infact freeze loaves, rolls, veg and the like - but have been doing that recently and making a lot more things from sctrach - ive got the bug!!!

On the subject of the big A, my local one in scotland (where i just happen to work)is doing the big massive box of DAZ for £7 (usually £14) but only for the next few days. same also goes for their tins of sweets 2 for £7 but stock up while u can, they are flying out the door.

does anyone have a cheap and easy lasagne receipe? i was inspired by watching the Gordon Ramsay cookalong live the other week, but when i check the ingrediants online, what was meant to be a "cheap" family meal had quite a lot of costly and possibly unnecessary ingrediants, couldnt help but chuckle to myself - weezle and co could beat this hands down lol.

an idiot proof receipe preferably :rotfl:

    Quick cheap lasagne recipe:

Lasagne sheets, veg. stock cube, basic grated cheese, a couple of sliced potatoes, a couple of chopped onions, pepper, fresh herbs if you grow your own:

Layer lasagne sheets with thinly sliced potatoes, sprinkle with chopped onions and grated cheese, sprinkle pepper and fresh chopped herbs, parsley best but any will do for flavour (rosemary also, you can pinch it from gardens that grow it in abundance as you walk by! hehe).

Cover with hot veg stock, finish with a sprinkling of cheese on top of last lasagne sheet, cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes, remove foil for last 2-3 minutes until cheese golden and bubbly, buon appetito!

If you are ok with bacon, bits of bacon between layers add flavour and some protein.

  • Lasagne recipe:

enough mince for 4 portions, dry fry with an onion, drain off any fat add one tin off chopped toms (or chop in the tin if you only have whole) a squeeze of tom puree and one or two beef stock cubes - too taste. Also a drop of worcester sauce or tabasco if you like also herbs if you want at this stage.

layer up meat sauce lasagne sheets - do not overlap the sheets or they will not cook through, then a layer of white or cheese sauce (I am lazy and use a mix of the two out of packets - I can't make a roux for love nor money)

then repeat the layers - sprinkle some cheese on the top in oven for about 30-40 mins at 200c.

Just to say for the benefit of virtual friends here on this thread - wishing cw18 all best wishes now and hugs ....as her husband has lost his battle with cancer earlier today. She has just told friends on the £4,000 a year thread.

So - best wishes and hugs again cw18 <<<hugs>>>
