For 6 bread rolls
250g flour, I just use the 35p Smartprice flour
1/2 tsp salt
sachet of instant yeast
1 1/4 cups warm water (310ml)
I printed off this recipe a while ago and got round to making them the other day. I must admit I was a bit worried about the amount of water you use as I use that amount normally when I use 500g of flour. When I'd mixed it all together it was liquid, and I ended up using a lot more flour when I was trying to shape them. Do you really use that much water?0 -
Right soap recipe 1
orange and poppyseed
200g carotino oil
300g coconut oil
200g olive oil
300g red palm oil
330g water
144g caustic soda
at trace
add 1 tablespoon poppy seeds and 4 teaspoons orange essential oil
I deliberately haven't printed instructions as would prefer people to do a bit of research befiore making any soap for the first time ,if you google cold process soap making you will find lots of info
making lemon and carrot marmalade today and banana bread and lentil bolognese for dinner .....yum

yes, I do. I have found that the flour varies a bit in how much water it soaks up. I do use a little more when shaping, but not loads. But I have found that a loose mix gives a better rise and lighter, crunchier topped rolls. The shaped rolls have a texture similar to marshmallows, on the soft side in other words, but firm enough to hold their shape.
You could always reduce the water if you prefer to work with a firmer dough - it's whatever works for you in the kitchen, I change and adapt things all the time.0 -

Many thanks for that little tip as i have now bought all my selection boxes for everyone, and feeling chuffed as it is was the last thing i needed on my list.:DBlackadder: Am I jumping the gun, Baldrick, or are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?

Hello everone.
i have been watching this board with some interest for months now but this is the 1st time i have posted. May i just say how much admiration that i have for what you guys are doing on here. its really is some achievement.
What with the current state of affairs in this country with the credit crunch and what not im finding it harder and harder to fill my trolley on my weekly trips to the supermrket (even though i work for the big A and get 10% discount. its getting tougher to feed me, hubby and our 5 year old on the budget we have. ive noticed how much prices have shot up recently. theres not much left over for luxuries once i buy the necessitys. (and by luxuries i mean choccie biscuits, ice cream and the like - fun food lol) i have made it my mission to get as much as i can for as little as i can meanwhile keeping a healthy and balanced diet for the family Your forum has given me the drive to do this. Its comforting to know were not the only ones suffering from the dismal economic climate and ive relised now that i need to change how i shop, do more home cooking from sctrach and start shoppping around etc.
You guys have game some great tips and receipes here. and ive made a few of them. the most sucessful being the Chewy Fruit Museli Slices. (which i managed to make at a cost of 0p as i had all the ingredients lurking around in my storecupbaord - woo hoo) theve went down a storm in my house. although i did tweek the receipe somewhat. instead of using the tinned prunes in apple juice i used pear juice from a tin of pear quarters as that is what i had at the time - but they were yummy. i served them as a tsty desert with the pears from the tin and a dollop of squirty cream. yummy!
Ive also started buying my fruit from my local fruit stall instead of the supermarket and will be doing this from now on (although i plan on trying to grow a few of my own veggies in the spring!!!) Yesterday for £2.25 i got:
5 mushrooms
3 carrots
1 red pepper
bunch of spring onions
5 minin boiling potatoes
6 Mackintosh reds
& 6 bananas
i used all the veg along with the stock cubes and a tin of tomatoes with chilli to make a lovely soup which should do for lunches over the next few days.
i defo got the bug for all this now and am going to have a go at making my own bread next week, so if anyone has any tips on "making cheap bread for dummys" please let me know. any receipes and tips would be greatley appreciated
thanks again guys from your newest recruit in the war on saving
