lesley, thanks those salads look fab!
thought I'd give you an update on how the growing's going, this year we have:
5 tomato plants all healthy but only 3 flowering so far?
several pots and 2 small beds of spinach
2 large pots mizuna
5 pots mixed red salad leaves
3 small beds corn salad
1 sweetcorn
lots of pots of basil and coriander, I'm going to let some of the coriander go to seed and use for curries!
1 squash and another 2 I'm babysitting for ISOM
3 fennel (also ISOM's)
1 raspberry plant with 10-11 ish fruit ripening
2 teeny wild strawberries
Lots of fruit waiting to appear on out thornless blackberry
11 apples ripening on our espalier tree
nastertiums for leaves and flowers
a couple of questions:
what do I do about pinching out for the toms?
How often do you feed yours?
Thanks for the tips for a warm fergus, looks like the nursery thermometer isn't measuring scary temps now, so that's great!

morning all,
Fergus is outraged that his female minion (mummy) won't turn the temperature down at night. He believes her to be capable of this, so why will she not answer his requests? All she's managed is to mop his brow with a cold wet muslin! Pah! Useless
all going well at finishing up the freezer before hols, just stocked up on milk and eggs. Also made some HM pesto with HG basil, but using mature cheddar and toasted cashews instead of the pricier pine nuts and parmesan, it is very nice and works out as 10p per portion for a generous 100g serving of pasta :money::money::money:
:rotfl::rotfl: Oh well....Fergus hasnt yet realised how lucky he is to have our Weezl for a mummy yet.....:D...give him time....give him time...and he will. Personally...I was sitting there t'other day "killing myself laughing" at your comment about the mat thingie under Fergus to monitor whether hes still breathing okay.....thinking "our Weezl is certainly being Conscientious Mummy of the Year here"...its quite obvious you're determined to make sure he has a "good start" in life from where I'm sitting....and I could see that was how it would be from the outset:D Its still quite obvious to me that Fergus chose his parents with great care and is obviously a very sensible lad....:D:rotfl:..ooooh....I would just LOVE to "fast forward" 20 years or so and see just why he was so particular to choose people who would do their best to be good parents to him....:rotfl::D I think your lad is "on a mission" here Weezl...and I still reckon he "chose" very carefully just who his parents would be.....:D...our Fergus is obviously a very intelligent/thoughtful chappie...:T0 -

A little LINKY might explain pinching out better than I could Weezl
Just scroll down a little to the "How to prune tomatoes" and click
As for feeding.... it really depends from variety of the feed...
I generally follow the instructions... but sometimes forget when I have feed them ect...
I have a Homebase own brand feed, and it says half a capful in a gallon of water once a week.... which I do more or less do, iykwim.
I have to admit..... as long as I remember to water them, especially in this heat, I am happy0 -

thanks Ceridwen!
yep, those monitors are a god-send to those of us of a conscientious/anxious disposition, certainly helped us get good sleep in the first few weeks! (well, at least when Fergie was asleep!) ISOM recommended us to get one, and at first I thought of it as a more luxury idea, and perhaps too much dosh, but I now think they are invaluablethey used to have them permanently under premature babies in the intensive care units...
I thought of you last night ceridwen, as my mum was sent to our lean-to to harvest some mizuna leaves to have with her dinner
thanks potty that's a useful linkie

....and I'm now killing myself laughing again...thinking "no-one disturbs our Fergus whilst ISOM is around being Auntie-in-Chief"....:D:rotfl:
Lets face it....I think anyone with "negative intentions" of any description towards our Fergus would be on a losing wicket to start with....Weezl and A.M. for parents/ISOM for "Auntie-in-Chief".....well...just who else does he need "on his side" in life?....:D:rotfl::rotfl:

Lesley_Gaye wrote: »I tried a new recipe last night from the summer edition of BBC Good Food Vegetarian. It was carrot and sesame burgers, it has tahini in it. The recipe used 750g carrots and said it makes 6. But that seemed much too much, so I halved the recipe and still made 8 ordinary sized burgers from it. Says it freezes well, so great for bargain carrot finds, and batch cooking. You could easily change the spicing too to ring the changes.
We had one with some relish in a wrap and a side salad, really good. The recipe is here http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/11011/carrot-and-sesame-burgers
Would it be possible for you to post this recipe (slightly altered because of copyright) as I cannot get this link to open. For some reason the main bbcgoodfood site won't open for me either
GRRRR!!

AUGUST GROCERY CHALLENGE £115.93/ £250

FOR FRUGILISTA and anyone else unable to get the link to work.
Ingredients- 750g carrots , peeled and grated
- 410g can chickpeas , drained and rinsed
- 1 small onion , roughly chopped
- 2 tbsp tahini paste , plus 1 tsp to serve
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 egg
- 3 tbsp olive oil
- 100g wholemeal breadcrumbs
- zest 1 lemon , plus 1 tsp juice
- 150ml pot natural yogurt
- 6 buns, rocket leaves, sliced red onion, sliced avocado and chilli sauce, to serve
- 3 tbsp sesame seeds
- Put a third of the grated carrot in a food processor with the chickpeas, onion, 2 tbsp tahini, cumin and egg. Whizz to a thick paste, then scrape into a large bowl. Heat 1 tbsp oil in your largest frying pan, tip in the remaining carrot and cook for 8-10 mins, stirring until the carrot is softened - it will become more golden as it is cooked. Add this cooked carrot to the whizzed paste with the breadcrumbs, lemon zest and sesame seeds. Add seasoning, then mix together well with your hands.
- Divide the mixture into 6, then using wet hands shape into burgers. Cover and chill until serving. Mix the yogurt with the remaining tahini and lemon juice, then chill.
- Fire up the barbecue, or heat a non-stick frying pan and brush the burgers with the remaining oil. Cook the burgers for 5 mins on each side, until golden and crisp. Meanwhile warm or toast the buns (or sit them on the barbecue alongside the burgers). When the burgers are ready, spread each bun with some of the lemony sesame yogurt, add the avocado, top with the burger, onion and rocket. Finish with a drizzle of chilli sauce.

That should suffice the copyright thingy (no changes made to recipe).
It's only a game
