On the subject of iron, I was anaemic during the end of my pregnancy but seemed to manage to boost my iron by simply making sure I had penty of iron rich foods every day. I added a spoonful of marmite (well, Asda's own yeast extract) to all sorts of soups, stews and stocks. I also like it in small amounts to plenty of butter ( :o ) on crackers. I always have plenty of beans and lentils, which I know you do too Weezl. Plenty of spinach (either frozen cubes or now I am getting the 50p bags of baby spinach from Asda to have in a salad/sandwiches daily.) I did start drinking OJ with meals, but for some reason it was making me feel sickly so had to stop that. The midwife also recommended I ate more red meat as we very rarely had it. It is only £2.50 for a 500g pack of organic beef mince in Asda so we made the most of this :T When I buy a pack, it is split between 2 meals across the week for me, OH and small portion for DD - don't want to make it stretch too much as I reckoned it would defeat the point, iyswim? ;):D I realise I am probably teaching granny to suck eggs here, as you are way more in the know than I am when it comes to the nutritional quality of various foods! But just thought I'd share what I did. HTH a bit anyway.x.

Hi all! Just thought I'd share a little frugal experiment I'm doing in an attempt to keep cool. :D I've whizzed up a can of Value Peaches in Syrup with a small amount of powdered sweetener and put it into a tub to freeze. In a few hours' time I'll take a fork to it to break up the ice crystals and then let it freeze. And I'm hoping for a nice peach sorbet.

Value tin of peaches in syrup = 27p
2 tsps of sweetener = ? (not sure, but I doubt it's very much)

It'd work out to about 5 or 6 portions, which would make it about 5p per portion (roughly, and if I've done my maths right). I also made a "proper" sorbet the other night, using 200g cherries with the stones removed, 200g sugar and 235ml of water. The sugar and the water were boiled until the sugar had dissolved, then cooled. The cherries were blitzed and the lot mixed together and put into a plastic container. Admittedly, the amount of sugar was far too high in my view as it has made a very sweet sorbet, but it is tasty and as the cherries were £1 a punnet, it is a relatively cheap luxury dessert which probably costs to about 15-20p a portion (again, that's if my maths is right).

...being on a bit of a sorbet kick, I got my mum to make one with some mango she had - same method, just using less sugar. It's really nice. So I wonder if you'd be able to use some pureed strawbs to make a "strawbet"

    Hope that helps :)

Talking of sorbets my Mum used to make an orange & lemon water ice. It was really refreshing and not too tart from what I remember. She used to make it as one of the desserts at her dinner parties - very 70's :D I'll ask her for the recipe, and post when I've got it, as it's undoubtly frugal to make containing only water, sugar, lemon & orange.

The falafels in pittas were lovely & just right for this heat. We had a spectacular thunderstorm over teatime as well

I've made some falafel mini balls/burgers instead and will do them in pitta breads with salad. I found the recipe on April's Grocery Challenge here if anyone fancies a look.

Ooh, tat looks yummy, and I got a 5 pence whoopsied pack of pittas yesterday - I think I'll try that tonight!

Frugalswan - your peach sorbet idea sounds great! Please do let us know how it went icon7.gif

It's all change on the supermarket front near me. There is currently a co-op and a somerfield, and now that co-op have bought out somerfield, they are taking over the somerfield site. The old co-op site has been bought by asda. Is it sad that I am quite excited?? :D - never had an asda before!!

    morning all,

Fergus is outraged that his female minion (mummy) won't turn the temperature down at night. He believes her to be capable of this, so why will she not answer his requests? All she's managed is to mop his brow with a cold wet muslin! Pah! Useless :)

all going well at finishing up the freezer before hols, just stocked up on milk and eggs. Also made some HM pesto with HG basil, but using mature cheddar and toasted cashews instead of the pricier pine nuts and parmesan, it is very nice and works out as 10p per portion for a generous 100g serving of pasta
