Hi all just had to pop in and let you know what a good influence you are all being on me. Went into Aberdeen today as DH had to pick something up from his work and we decided to go down the road, walked round the shops for 2 hours looking at things going "i'm not paying that for that" or "thats nice but do i really need it........no" so ended up spending £2.98 on............1kg of oats and 1kg of lentils. Came home really chuffed with myself for not spending money but really annoyed it took up about 5 hours of my day......so loving this thread!!!konMarie and fabbing all the way

Good evening
I would post regularly, but am still trying to read through the whole part 1 of this thread!!!
Am just curious; as there's lots of discussion going on about bottling things . . . what kinds of things are you all bottling? I didn't know it was possible to do this at home.
& someone mentioned, hm wholemeal pizza bases, how do you make pizza bases? Is it just like making bread but roll it out flat rather than pop in a loaf tin if that makes sense?
I'm still really impressed with all the ideas that everyone's coming up with on here! There's loads of ways to save that I'd never thought about but will be putting into practise xx0 -
Good morning everyone
I have been preserving produce for many years, I bottle (in a Agee water bath,) all fruit, usually make up a sugar syrup. Tomatoes as long as they are the heritage type are ok. The modern ones often are low acid, which makes it pretty dangerous.
Vegetables I usually dehydrate, pickle or freeze. My Agee book does give instructions to bottle, but as they are low acid I think its far too dangerous. I have been looking for a pressure canner - which is a different beastie from a pressure cooker, to do veggies but would have to import from USA which would be horrendously expensive.
Hope this helps
Cheers
Jennie
About to spend the day at the river white baiting, so it may be a frugal dinner!0 -
Back to the subject of the Dehydrator - I bought one a few months ago and when it arrived I thought what do I do now:eek:
Since then I have had quite a few successes -
A big box of woopsied mushrooms dried beautifully, Smart Price Granny Smiths that were too sour even for my OH to eat turned into lovely nibbles for my lunch box. Pineapples I got on special were particularly nice. I'm sending OH to Aldi tomorrow cos they have pears on offer and I'll be doing the same with them.
I havent tried meat yet - I have never been a big fan of jerky so I may not bother.
I have a BM that I never use - it's just a waste of time for me, a bag of flour makes 2 loaves, a batch of rolls and either pizza bases or chelsea buns - I'd like to see a BM that could manage that all at the same time:rotfl:0 -
Evening everyone,
Been foraging for free food today. Thought at first when I saw them on floor that they were plums but on picking them found out they are apples, probably crab tho' very red all over so maybe not crab apples just apples.Only size of plum tho'. So what apart from crab apple jelly can I make? If they aren't crab apples I could do loads but if crabs will they be too sour for anything but jelly?
Shaz your roasted veg sound good. I did a load of peppers, tomatoes, garlic and onions the other day and they are nomnom. Live very close to the market so can pop out at 4ish as they start to pack up when the veg man sells stuff so cheaply at end of day. Got lettuce, cucumber. radishes and spring onions for a £1 a bag on Sat and two packs of cherry tomatoes for a £1 yest. About 50 little sweet toms. yum. Roasted them whole until charred, with olive oil and garlic. Lovely on crosstini.
More non labellers I see, lucky dip freezers all round. It's good tho' as you find stuff you didn't know you had and it's a nice surprise. Pot luck suppers.0 -
I keep a roll of masking tape in the kitchen (usually 3 rolls for £1 in most shops) and label everything with that. Can write on it with pencil or pen; the writing doesn't run in the freezer and it peels off easily when you come to wash the container. In fact, I label nearly everything now!!"Men are generally more careful of the breed(ing) of their horses and dogs than of their children" - William Penn 1644-1718
