    hello queen of string :)

whereabouts in canada are you headed?

I have cordial thoughts today, and sorbet too, like guapa, both made with elderflowers! We're going foraging this afternoon... last year we didn't use the citric acid and it seemed ok, so I'll try it that way again...

My friend from work took me to an Asian supermarket in Rotherham last night and it was amazing.

Hi Sian, was this the one on Wellgate? It sounds great and I would like to call in when I'm next there.

Thanks Sian for the Millies style cookies recipe that I made for a friend leaving work with all storecupboard ingredients. They went down a storm at work and 2 people asked me for the recipe! Managed to snaffle 2 and they were lovely :D

The only alteration I made was not using vanilla extract because I had run out and I bashed up a bar of milk chocolate into small pieces alongside a set of v.small chwey choc chunks I bought in a set ages ago (used them up at last!)

I didn't cost these, I think I made about 23 in total and I don't imagine the cost was anywhere near the price of one from Millies!

    Hi

I have been a lurker for probably about a year now and have got lots of great tips from this site and visit most days! Last year I left a job which was well paid but in which I became increasingly unhappy for various reasons for a job as a Teaching Assistant which is much more rewarding but (typically!) less well paid.

Anyway, we have coped ok financially by being more careful, am now 6 months pregnant and have been worrying that I'm not eating enough fruit and veg. I love fruit and veg but have always had problems thinking of new and imaginative ways to serve them rather than just the traditional salads and meat and two veg way!

Now our income is reduced and food prices are so high I am struggling to find bargain fruit and veg and ways to serve them. Also when I do buy a pile of veg I don't seem to use all of it and some gets wasted (not very money saving I know!!!

I do have homemade porridge most mornings for breakfast and put some raisins on this as well as having a glass of orange juice to wash it down. I also try and put tomatoes / peppers in my lunchtime sandwich and have an apple or banana but am aware that I am not varying the fruit and veg I eat enough and I really get stuck with having some with my evening meal. I love cooking from scratcg and cook my own bread, make own cakes etc. but am really stuck on this issue.

Its a combination of lack of ideas with for serving fruit and veg and the high prices and not wanting to waste food. Do any of you knowledgeable people have any tips how I can eat more fruit and veg? Should I use more canned and frozen veg as well as fresh do you think??? Any suggestions / advice greatfully recieved!

    Best wishes,

    AlexRed :hello:

I made the Millie's coolies this morning and they are lush! Thank you so much for the recipe Sian! I actually halved the amount of chocolate, and added in some glace cherries to some of them as I had some knocking around. May try a raisin and oatmeal version soon- will let you know how they go.

Alex- i find frozen veg can be very useful and good value. Frozen spinach is good and much cheaper than fresh (volume for volume of cooked product), frozen peppers are also useful as you can add a handful when needed and not worry about them going off. I also find adding grated carrots to things like bolognese, chilli etc ups the veg content and makes the meal go further.

I'm sure Weezl will have tons of suggestions of the best value ways to get your five a day. When's your due date, Alex? My first is due 4th Nov and we are going to have to be very frugal when I am on Mat leave!
