My Mum still makes a dish she calls Pepperoni. Cook rice, make a ratatouille sort of sauce with tinned toms, peppers, courgettes, onion & herbs. Then put the rice in a ring round the plate and the sauce in the middle. Drop an egg into the middle of the sauce, cover with grated cheese and put the plate into the oven until the cheese has melted & the egg cooked. It's yummy when you break through the melted cheese to runny egg yolk and tomatoey sauce

That recipe sounds possible for my dinner tonight.

I was writing it down - assuming you were talking family size amounts - and then came to the bit about "plate" and breaking through into egg - and am now thinking that presumably the rice and sauce get cooked in whatever size portions one wants
    - but then one puts some of each onto a single size serving dish and the egg and cheese on top (ie one egg EACH).

    Errr.....am I right?

Not really lovely weezl as I don't eat bread, will have to do a search and see what I find.

Sian - I have written the cookie recipe down - sound lovely and can't wait to try it!

Oh how rude, forgot to say Morning!

SunnyGirl - that recipe sounds lovely. I'll give this a try probably without the cheese as I only have mozzerella and bit of parmesan in. Tea sorted for tonight or tomorrow :D

    Good luck Bashful :D

I'm aching from gardening yesterday - I feel as tho I have done some exercise!

    Have a lovely day everyone!

All crossed for you Shaz! It's a nerve wracking time.

Bashful- sending lots of labour vibes your way. I think my baby is telling me to put my feet up today. I am feeling absolutely wiped out, which has conincided with running out of my prescribed iron tablets at the weekend...funny that! Tried to take a sick day but no-one to cover my shift so have ended up with a half day at work. At least I can rest all morning.

Was fairly frugal last night. Really wanted a chinese takeaway but instead used up some hoi sin sauce that had been lurking in the cupboard and made a delicious quorn, veggies and pineapple dish with rice. Was a bit of a triumph, actually and probably didn't cost too much as was all just odds and ends. May wander off and cost it out actually while I sit with my feet up....worked out to be £1.16 per portion so not dead frugal, but would be 80p per portion if I'd used Value sauce (but I was using up odds and ends I alreday had).

    Morning!
Will see what I can do with costings... I am a bit rubbish on that kind of thing as I don't keep my receipts (embarrassed smiley) and things like sugar I tend to get fairtrade where it is available, will have a look when I get home tonight, sure I can manage it.... :)

Had a very frugal bank holiday in the end, went to the park with some friends and played some frisbee and baseball, had a picnic, had some friends round for tea (more free sausages!) and played some silly word games, much fun and a heck of a lot cheaper than Alton Towers :)

So many babies popping into the world, how exciting :D
Hope all goes well Bashful! Got it spend it, hope you get chance to have a rest later, have to say I would be tired if I had to give up my 6 cups of tea a day for 9 months ;)

    Have a good day all!

On the costings, I just look up the items on tesco.com (cos that is where I tend to shop). It very helpfully has the price per item for things like fruit and veg, and the price per kg for things like rice, pasta etc so it's pretty easy to work out as long as you have a reasonable idea of portion sizes. I have been thinking recently that it's not that accurate when using up store cupboard goodies as they probably cost less than the current price when I bought them, but I guess it does give an fairly accurate costing if I was to make the meal again now, IYKWIM......

Your BH sounds like lots of fun :T.

Hope everyone had a good bank holiday!

@ Boredofbeingat home, I wish I had a Home Bargains nearby. The closest one to me is 43 miles away.

@insearchofme, I've been to a plain clinic and did the pain management course. Please let me know when you're ready to share your blog! As for families... Don't get me started, it feels like they are existing to annoy me at the moment.

@Cazz. Wow, that looks better than what my local Indian serves!

@ Bashful, all fingers and toes are crossed for you.

@ Shaz, good luck with the MOT and exam results.

Washing up liquid: I buy the big bottles, and then pour half into a normal sized washing up bottle, and then top it with water. I did manage try to whittle it down to a quarter, but it was too diluted.

Growing herbs: I did this in my flat and had a constant supply of basil and lettuce leaves it was great. I'm trying to do it at my mums house and it's simply not working this time. :o I tried to be adventurous and started some tomatoes. I gave the extra shoots to my favourite librarian (so many avid readers in this thread... Not surprising considering how long it is! :rotfl:), and she said hers are sprouting, but mine aren't

Thanks for the blog links, I'll have a look at them later in the week.

I'm very excited as my friend won tickets to see Beyonce tomorrow and is taking me with her! :j
It's a long journey though, so I'm going to make a flask of carrot and lentil soup to take with us instead of stopping off at expensive service places.

We'll be staying the night and coming back down south on Thursday. I'm so looking forward to having chips and gravy. Simple tastes me! :D
Getting there... A deal at a time. :T
