    Hello Weezl!
Glad you like the blue fluffy and thanks I did get your messages. I can't believe tha time that you are getting up; although I know what it is not to be able to sleep for me it usually menans going to bed late or not dropping off if I do - obviously Fergus is causing quite a different effect but at this rate you'll be entirely nocturnal!
  • Weezl, you'd do your child a dis-favour by giving them a conventional name, no one ever forgets the one with the unusual name, I named one of mine Casper and that has never gone against him.
If you love a name, stick with it and those who don't like it are just jealous 'cause they don't dare stick out from the crowd!!

Be who you are, that's why we all want to be your friend!

  • yes our ceridwen there re friendly mouse traps (you catch em then release couple miles away and they go live somewhere else but seems unfair of a mouse who would then be all disoriented?). I would favor mothballs on the floor - worked in the shed cos they dont like the smell so stay away! Mr Aetate monkey suggested lending a cat but alas my bunch are (I think) of the cute but not much brain power variety! Manu (british blue) the only one likely to try anything and I suspect she'd get bored in seconds as its quite beneath her; Alfie would bat his eyelashes at the mouse, dotty would just say "what?" and poppy would hiss then hide under the bed! Lovely but not functional...

  • Hello all!

As requested, my version of rock buns, with all due thanks to Marguerite Patton whose recipe book I originally found them in about 20 yrs ago and since then have adapted to suit me! Not sure how frugal they are but they are nice!

    8oz self raising flour
1 1/2 tsp mixed spice (I sometimes use 1 tsp spice and 1/2 tsp cinnamon as I love cinnamon)
4 oz sugar (caster or granulated)
5 oz butter or marg (have used 4oz when short of marg)
    5 oz mixed dry fruit
2 oz mixed candied peel (I sometimes miss this out and just use 7oz of fruit)
    1 egg
    milk to bind

To top - demerara sugar pref, but any sugar works!
    • Sieve the flour and spices into a mixing bowl and rub in the fat.
    • Add the sugar, fruit, peel and an egg. Mix well and add just enough milk to make a sticky consistancy. The milk isn't an exact science as you can tell!
    • Grease two baking trays
    • Place large spoonfuls (or a 'blob':p ) onto the baking trays, leaving room for them to spread. I usually get about 12-14 out of this, including leaving some raw mixture in the bowl for me to lick!
    • Sprinkle the tops with a little sugar.
    • Bake in the centre of a hot oven - 220 degrees C (which I think is Gas mark 7) for 10 - 12 mins.
    • Leave to cool for 5 mins on the tray before lifting to a wire rack to cool completely.
This version of rock buns isn't as 'knobbly' as some I have seen, as they do spread a little, but they do taste really good! They are delicious eaten fresh but can be frozen if needed.

    Hope you enjoy!

Every time this thread gets updated I have a lok to see if it's Fergus putting in an appearance! :D
Weezl, I can't imagine what the person who criticised your choice of name was worried about - don't let them put you off having what you and AM like best. And if you change names, it will confuse us too :).

  • Well I'm calling him Fergus even if mummy and daddy arent!! Told em that months ago! He's not made an appearance yet and think we should all keep fingers crossed that them there weezles and acetates get time to finish the house a bit first and sit down to breathe a sigh of relief before he pops his head out (very quicky and gently weezl...long thin baby that he is!!) ... pottery day here - may do rock cakes (be rude not to now that diva so kindly posted recipe!) but tidying and housework def needed!! hugs all...

    Hiya ISOM

Hmmm....well we know Fergus is going to be tall. With Weezl and A.M. as parents - there's a good chance he will be intelligent. Put it this way - he aint letting our Weezl sleep properly at night - so maybe his mind is so active already that he wants to be "out here" getting on with it:D .....errr.....I think maybe 2 years old is a little early to be reading even for a Fergus - but by the time he starts school I reckon he already will be. Just leave the Latin and Science until he's at least 7 maybe?;) :D ..though I do notice that a lot of these American fundamentalist bloggers homeschool and some of them give quite extensive how-to details on their blogs:D . Thinks - well I've got links to a lot of this type of blog on my other main thread ie the "living on $12,000 a year" one.

Before Weezl keels over from shock and exhaustion - 'tis okay our Weezl - we dont really expect you to be Superwoman or Supermom:D

    Re: baby names.

A few years back a female friend asked me what I would call a daughter of mine. I can't remember what I said, but she said "No! it rhymes with [can't remember], she'll get picked on! I would call mine Sofia". This friend was 10 years older than me, but I remember thinking, How ridiculous! In any case, I'd rather she was picked on for her name and not for personal attributes... I was never picked on for my name (an unusual one) but I was for wearing glasses...

Edited to say: OMG! There was a baby shower thread and I missed it!!! Not only that but I didn't know there'd be one with RL presents and all.... And I didnt get to send anything!!! *runs to the corner wailing* (not that I could afford anything atm but still...)
