ceridwen and charis - yes, go for it.............put pen to paper -I'm sure you both have had a life worth knowing about and you earn yourselves a tidy sum, who knows.

I've spent the last three years studying creative writing and am doing a fourth year at the moment. I got my best mark for 'life writing' but, having studied the writing market, I know that unless you have something really gruesome you are prepared to share with the world, you probably won't get published. If you are a 'celebrity' they will publish anything you care to tell them and even get someone to write it for you if you can't or won't write it yourself. :p Making money is the main motivation in publishing.

However, the act of writing about your life is, as you say, very therapeutic. You can clear out a lot of mental clutter in the process. It can sometimes be painful but better than carrying on trying to bury your feelings. I'll leave my scribbles to my daughter, the boys probably won't read them. I wish my ancestors had left me their life stories. Even the day to day stuff would be fascinating to read now.

One thing every author does do is use events and experiences from their own life to create fiction. Many of Dicken's characters were based on people he knew or met. His father was in Marshalsea prison, featured in the current BBC production of Little Dorritt There is certainly a lot in my life that could find its way into print disguised in a story or a play.

charis - I expect my 'ramblings' will be passed on for my sons to read through, then my grandchildren. Although they know a lot about me in many ways there's still a lot that's a little bit hidden away..........feelings etc. Maybe they'll come out eventually and my kids will know why I am the person I am.
My dad kept diaries for some years but just small entries.....the weather, if he and Mum went out, whether she won at bingo - little everyday things like that but I have to admit it did open my eyes as to how close and loving they were.
But dad being dad, any 'bad' events were never noted........my divorce was never mentioned, me moving away was missed - anything he obviously wasn't too happy about which is sad really............I'd love to have know what he really truly thought.
So, next year (I say it every year) I'm keeping a diary.............if only to look back on in a few years time for a chuckle................lol

    Hello simple-livers :santa2:
I can't find the usual friendly waving chap tonight so Santa will have to do.
I'm going to have to settle down with a cup of tea and find out what you have been up to.
I'm also going to have to l e a p back into simplifying as we plan to move next summer (back to Scotland :j) and I have a lot of clearing out to do, painting for -fingers crossed- selling, or perhaps more realistically renting out!!
I think I will have to tackle it all in baby steps as it can be overwhelming.
I will keep popping in here for inspiration.
I've kept up the simple living, inspired by your thread Ceridwen, and everything from meal times to cleaning are so much easier.
Hang on - another wave of inspiration has hit so I'm off to clear out some real junk that can only go in the bin - binmen come tomorrow morning.

    wow, what a women!
a little extreme but it proves that you dont really need what we all have.
i wouldnt want to go to such extremes but if we all took one or two of her habits what a difference it would make.

i do suspect she is a little bit mad too................

An amazing women! I could never be so extreme, but I applaud her for living to her principles and for her ceaseless campaigning. :T thanks for the link looby

  • Why " sad " ? She may not be living life your way, and I'm not advocating we all live life like her, but she appears happy, healthy, fulfilled and definitely not to be pitied or scorned. Good for her. She developed a set of principles and a way of life and has stuck to them for 35 years, not harming anyone else and helping the environment. To have that gumption in a day and age when so many people are lacking in that quality, and the sheep mentality is getting worse than ever, deserves applause.
