Sorry, I wasn't playing a guessing game with you :)

It was just a group I'd heard of, and thought I'd mention them. They popped into my head because they shun radio, tv, etc. same as the Amish.

I think in the last 50 years we've been on a hamster wheel, running forever to get more/buy more/have more. And that now the wise hamsters are letting go and dropping off. :D
LIFE IS NOT ALL ABOUT "THINGS" OR MONEY and when you have let go and dropped off the wheel then you have time to see that.

Molly41 - what the life expectancy - do they live longer? I saw the other day that US life expectancy is below the UK despite all the medical technology.

Their life expectancy is greater than average but then they look out and care for each other. As regards family and childbirth they have much larger families - 12/13 children which obviously impacts on women's health. They also do consume a lot of sugar/ high fat stuff as well as the good foods they grow so that impacts on health with higher incidence of diabetes. Obviously their lifestyle is very physical and the children run free.

Now Plymouth Brethren - I used to look after a lot of women from that religion as we have a fairly large community around here (market Town South Northants). Some things are similar in that they rely on each other, shun the outside world but they are very much more materialistic. Although they dont allow for tv/ radio they all seem to push the latest designer buggy and dress beautifully.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

The Amish, suprisingly, have websites and they are very interesting especially the recipes. I have always been interested in the Amish way of life but one thing that sticks out from a programme I saw was the children running to worship with their parents all dressed up but with bare feet in the freezing cold??? Don't know what that was all about.

I had a friend who is a Quaker and he is a very calm young man, we worked in shops opposite each other and talked mainly business but would love to have had time to find out about his religion.

I was told when I was younger that everyone has a religion. This is because their religion is basically what they revolve their life around and use to choose what standards they have.
I believe this is true. Some have footie as the centre of their lives and more or less worship it. Others it could be drink or drugs. Many it will be God or similar. But of course there will always be those that worship material things and there aim in life will always be to have the biggest and best!

i remember when we were in ohio on holiday a few years ago going to an Amish thing ... we had been invited to it because the friends that we were staying with did some work for the Amish community ... if anyone needed driving anywhere they were hired to drive them to where they wanted to go ... it was an interesting experience but most certainly not the type of life i would wish to lead

quakers on the whole i have found to be very lovely people but when i read a wee bit about the family of a well known chocolate brand ( did you know alot of well known chocolate/sweet brands were started by quakers?) i was saddened by what i had read ...

i think that alot of people are looking at alternatives to the god of money... some are turning to paganism, shamanism etc i think its good to look into different beliefs structures but i think it is vitally important to find your own way .... i personally go between taoism, shamanism, energy work and intuition that works for me ... its an interesting journey

my family in past generations worked for cadbury's so I am in fact reviving the quaker tradition. I have to say mentioning amish and quaker in the same thread may make folk think they are similar I don't think so at all. In fact some (quakers) won't really call quakerism a religion. Anyhow my point really which I think is taken is that it is the simplicity of life which some groups adopt which I think is interesting. What tips can we learn and benefits etc.

i agree that Amish and Quaker are two different belief systems ... but they do live a simple life ... which is what this thread is kinda about so i can see why people are making the resemblance

i think with the way things are on the os board many are living a very simple life as it is more can be done yes ... but it has to be changes that as individuals we are comfortable with making so that is becoming an enjoyable journey of discovery instead of a teeth pulling excercise

I know nothing about the Cadbury family (I assume that's to whom you refer) but boy Mr Cadbury made Bournville soooooo pretty. Just a shame the urban sprawl of Birmingham has swallowed it up :(
