Yeh i've began to notice this increase is data charges :(. I use FishText on my phone over wifi connection whenever possible, that way i skip out any data charges all together.
  • just a warning as I've just been caught out - Domino's Pizza started sending me unsolicited text messages (no you can't do a thing about this if you've used your phone to order a pizza they are free to use your number for marketing until you ask them to STOP) - so I did - I text back STOP to 60606 and was charged 12p to OPT-OUT as they put - but I never opted-in, and why should I be charged 12p to say no - Domino's used a PREMIUM RATE CARRIER so I'm actually lucky I wasn't charged £1 for the original text - note it did not say FREE MSG at the start. To add insult to injury - I didn't know they had charged me 12p at first because I have a pay-as-go-phone - only when I worried it might be a hoax premium rate did I phone Vodafone to confirm it was genuine they then dropped the bomb shell this company Altine Ltd 60606 charges £1 and 12p - The Vodafone call cost me another fixed fee of 25p so that's 37p to say no! For something I never asked for.

Use your mobile if less than 2 years old to turn off Caller ID in the settings - it stops them capturing your number when you call, or dail 141 though this doesn't always work! You can ask your Mobile Phone Company to BAR ALL TEXT MESSAGES but that kind of makes your phone useless!

    Hi ej8113

This actually happened to me too.

Vodafone offer a bar to stop premium rate messages. If you have a quick look here you will see how to have this added and what it does.

This would stop simillar things happening in future.

    See you around the forum!

Been doing some trial and error since my last post:

Most of the PayGo options are useless for txt over IP, as they have to charge a minimum amount "per connection", even ASDA with it's 20p/MB headline rate.

3Pay on the other hand is working out ok so far, as they bundle 150MB with every top up. And contrary to what their customer service told me, my allowance is being deducted per KB. It remains to be seen what the minimum charge is once this runs out tho, and I wouldn't trust what cust serv say as far as I can spit. If it's 1p then in txt over IP terms that roughly equates to £10/MB. Another drawback is that you must have a 3G handset.

Orange have done a U turn on their charge increases, and remain, for now, at £3/MB. So not so bad (if youre on contract). I had already decided to ditch them in the 2 month interim, between announcing the increase and announcing the U turn, so stuff 'em.

Get the friend in Ireland to send you an Irish SIM, or in fact it isn't necessary to actually send it to you, just tell you the confirmation message when signing up online. Most Irish networks offer free texts sent from logged in on their website, some to same network or all Irish numbers, but O2 is the most interesting as they can be international.

Dowsy - depends how many you send & how much hassle you're prepared to accept..

I assume with that phone you're on a contract with a decent data tariff or bundle..
I do the same, and find that for convenience Fishtext remains unbeatable at 1.3p/txt, + data charges, to Ireland.. (Ireland to UK is 3c/txt).. If you don't have a UK txt bundle then you can also use it for that at 2p/txt..
If you txt a lot you can effectively get a 20% discount on the above prices by topping up by £20.

If you both use fishtext then they can be totally free :-)
You need to configure it to access the server every few minutes, so again it all depends on your data tariff & how many txts you're exchanging.. (Oh.. and it'll sting your battery life in this configuration. Especially on 3G/UMTS.. I'd be intereseted to hear anyone else's experiences in this).

    Nokia 5800:
    2G + Fishtext set to 2 min intervals - battery life ~ 2 days.
    3G + Fishtext set to 2 min intervals - battery life ~ 8 to 10 hours.

@pxtb - do you know if smsbug.com can be used from Germany to the UK? I am lookng for a cheaper mobile calling/ text deal than my current one. I pay 13cents per sms at the moment!

    Thanks
