we have managed to keep our holiday but we had to pay £2000 extra but we will get our last holiday together as a family

to the people who are being "reasonable" when it comes to xl, it is easier to say the things about them e.g "not there fault, They didnt know" if you had lost your hoiliday and potentially thousands of pounds then you wouldnt be reasonable at all! the owners of the company will be non the poorer still rich in their mantions and bentleys, the shouldnt of carried on trading, they knew they were going under and they used this as an quick escape, they arnt totally bankcrupt im sure the ones at the top had a nice pay slip before it all went wrong!

put yourself in other peoples postions before you point the finger!

Who was pointing the finger? All posts have been very sympathetic.

I really sympathise with everyone caught up in this mess. I was in Vegas at christmas when Maxjet went bankrupt, it was announced on the first day of our trip and we spent a horrible christmas wondering how we were getting home and how much it would cost.

I hope everyone stranded gets home safe and well and those who have paid for holidays get refunds.

thankyou so much for breaking the hearts of my family and so many people we have been waiting half a year for our holiday to florida which we have been planning for 4 years
we may not even get out £6000 back
thanks alot, i hope the owner of the comapny can sleep tonight i know i wont

    £6000?
    Eh?

How have you spent £6000? Their flights costs £200-£300.

Fact is you chose to book on XL which is a low-cost airline. One of the reasons they are low-cost is because they chose not to fully hedge their fuel costs to be able to sustain oil rising in price by a multiple of six. They passed this onto you as the consumer and to many hundreds of thousands of passengers in the past.

Unfortunately a bunch of speculators sent oil prices soaring by 600% and they went out of business.

I can assure you the owner of the company has got bigger problems than you, given that all of his staff are out of a job and his dreams have gone up in smoke.

You'll be able to have another holiday, but he and his staff have much bigger problems, they have no jobs. And it isn't something he set out to achieve. Surprisingly enough not even the evil pantomime capitalists you seem to imagine run companies can make a good living out of NOT flying planes.

well if you actually look into it the collapse of XL you would know it was the 3rd biggest tour operator in the country
that means they cover alot more then just planes they cover package holidays etc and companys such as travel city direct etc

not just the planes have gone down but everything thing else
so once again learn you facts before come out with unsupported comments,
secondly those at the top will have plenty of money, its the ones at the bottom that will suffer thre are plenty of jobs out there its just a matter of preference job centre plus plenty of work so im sure they would find something if you want to use your narrow minded thoughts on the matter
  • Johnlongson - Did you book through Travel City Direct? If so it's ATOL protected, I'm owed, £2500.00, and hope to get it back. i've been told it may take 2 years, it's disheartening I know, ignore these people who are practically saying "it's your own fault", they want to hope it doesn't happen to them. I had travelled with TCD on a number of occasions in the past and was always satisfied with the service/cost. Sarah23

I still find it hard to believe you paid £6000 for a holiday with them.

I think you also need to 'learn some facts' before commenting. Getting a job is NOT easy in the current climate. You make it sound like you can stroll down to the job center, ask for a job and be given one starting on Monday.

You might well be upset and bitter, but talking rubbish won't help yourself or anyone else.

    This doesn't even make sense.
  • Is it just me or is anyone else angry at the fact that our "Government" have not given any response to the collapse of XL, any other country would have had a conference offering all the help they could give to stranded passengers abroad.

Are you surprised? That said, the Civil Aviation Authority has already arranged 94 flights to bring back 22,000 XL passengers, and will continue to do so for the next two weeks. They have kept their website up to date with details of such flights etc... not too bad for a government agency, especially considering it all happened over a weekend.

I sympathise hugely with anyone who has lost a holiday as a result of the XL collapse, it must be awful, and indeed angering. But at the same time, no-one wanted the company to go under, the board fought to the death to keep the company going, and as late as last week there were news reports that suggested a re-financing deal looked likely.

I'm not sure what people mean by an 'advance warning' either? While ideological, it is not ever an option. Lets say 2 weeks ago XL had stopped taking bookings, or made a statement saying there's a big chance we won't be here in 10 days. That would have been it there and then; any creditor would call in the debts, airports would panic and impound the aircraft in a bid to recover debts; and the whole lot would fold immediately. Then there would be people saying "well why didn't we have advance warning?" and the circle starts again. Businesses don't wind down, they trade up until they become insolvent. A business can't ever give a warning that they are on dodgy ground (unless they are a bank that thinks the government will bail them out - but thats another story...)

Sympathies to everyone who lost a holiday with XL. Sympathies to all their staff who don't know where next months mortgage payment is coming from.

As I have mentioned previously the one thing the Government can do is to introduce a protections scheme that will cover everyone regardless of how they booked or paid for their holiday. The travel industry have wanted this introduced for years, it's time to finally do the right thing and introduce a protection scheme once and for all.
