I think anyone who charges for time/inconvenience etc in order to pick and post is:
    1 Deceiving the buyer
2 Deceiving themselves if they try to justify it.

Look at it this way if I go to an Argos to pick and post how can I judge the expense, its not like I'm not going to try for a bargain myself whilst there is it? ok so that considered just exactly how much of my time is dedicated to the purchase of the requester and how much to my own purchase and the same can be said about fuel/vehicle fatigue etc {would it have been less to just pick up for myself?} so that leaves the trip to the post office, how many of us don't pass a post office in their normal daily routine within say a week? that said the time involved in standing in a seven foot urine smelling queue? again who wouldn't benefit from a ten minute chill out once a week? I can honestly see no reason why the above criteria wouldn't apply to the vast majority of those using this thread, ok there will be exceptions but as stated numerous times already these can be negotiated on a one to one basis,

Sorry benj but your proposal would only be of benefit to the gannets, I'm sure you mean well but what you suggest is tantamount to an invitation for profiteering, anyone incurring a cost they wish to recoup could always pick up an extra item and ebay it with a sound conscience they were not profiteering merely offsetting costs, this is the way I have covered any costs incurred and I certainly don't mind admitting it, anyone viewing my auctions will see readily what items I may have obtained by my access to this site and they are modest to say the least!

I have spent many hours colating lists and some expense has been incurred entertaining and rewarding staff for information which has enabled me to alert members of this site to forthcoming bargains, should I set a levy for this info? how about stumpy and the masses of hours she has put in maintaining her sites should she receive some recompense? I could name many who have contributed such as the op John_c, Edinbhlass, Alias, and on and on and I would suggest in all cases the answer be no! we all benefit from sharing information and resources along with experiences and time just different amounts and in different ways the term swings and roundabouts very apt to this site, our contributions will be rewarded many times over with savings elsewhere on the site not just on this thread and it is right that wherever possible we absorb any costs and seek to recoup them elsewhere when we can there is every likelyhood we will all need a favour in the future just look upon any reasonable expense you incur as an investment in your own future savings.

Getting through soap boxes quicker than argos pens these days!

    ARGOS 2 - JAN/FEB 2005 (OR WHENEVER!)

Now I know there have been loads of people out there who have willingly offered to pick stuff up for other people - I've both helped and benefited myself.  Would it be worth setting up a list of usernames who are willing to pick stuff up from particular stores to simplify the matter?  I guess Scotland would be pretty much covered ;).
    [/list]

Watched and read this thread for long time, collecting and knowing who can or would collect from certain stores i think would be a good idea - someone finds something - look the list - pm user direct instead of maybe posting and user missing post.

I can collect from East Kilbride on a nearly daily basis unfortunatly theve not had much ro stock for a long time, well not the hundreds of codes ive checked :(
The more i save the more i can spend:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Okay folks, got the message :)

Just a few final comments from the other side of the fence, and then I'll leave it be.

I get the underlying feeling that there is a suspicion of profiteering on my part - I can assure you that that's not the case at all.

My idea was to increase the bargain hunting, allowing people to r&r anywhere with a degree of confidence that they'd be able to get it picked up. In particular, I thought it would benefit those who are either new to Argositis or those who under anything but desperate circumstances don't like asking for help (and possibly not getting it). They do exist - call them shy if you like - and I'd count myself as one of 'em.

The idea of setting a guideline for fees was to avoid the 'what's right / justification' scenario. Think of it as a way to give a little thank you without worrying if the amount is right. Of course no one could insist a collector take the payment ;)

In addition, the 'thank you' element would have encouraged a few more people to offer to collect stuff, and, as a result, meant that the superstars who already go long distances don't have to go quite as far.

Finally - thanks to the MSE'ers (you know who you are) who have PMed with their details - I appreciate your offers, but I guess this ideas short life is over now. Boo Hoo:'( :'(:'(:'(:'(:'(:'(:'(:'(:'(:'( :P
Life should be a little nuts; otherwise it's just a bunch of Thursdays strung together.
  • I can only add my agreement to what has already been said.
Plus I would like to be able to pick and choose who I help, I have had one line pm's from people saying I want....well straight into the trash can goes that one!! On the other hand I have made good friends out of others not just here but on other boards on MSE and am happy to help out if I can.

Funny Ben should be the one to mention picking up bargains for yourself while picking up for other people. I made a special journey to pick up for Ben one evening but managed to bag myself a set of luggage so was well pleased :D

Also its worth noting at the beginning of the Argos Sales and Swaps thread that Martin himself has an insert which states he is allowing this to carry on with the proviso that nobody profits from a sale or swap and to me adding on an extra for time and trouble is profiteering.

Ironing board just collapsed on me tonight, worked out it is/was 33 years old, anyone seen a ironing board on their travels ;D ;D
