Baby vs. Debt

  • I think that aslong as there is love there is hope and you will make this work if thats what you want. I would suggest that you should start trying - after all, you dont know how long it will take. Good luck with whatever you decide to do

Thank you. I agree with the last comment of not having to have a home secured as you have 9 months to think about that. After OH debts are out the way I would say that yes we could live on his wage but I def would be returning to work after the baby was about 7 months and SIL has agreed that, seeings she doesnt work and has just had a baby herself, that she would be more than happy to take care of baby during the day whilst we work, we both work for my fathers business. I realise that I may change my mind by the time it comes down to it but these are my thoughts at the moment.

The minimum you get is 6 weeks maternity at 90% (yay British government!), so you'll have about 10 months of income (assuming you fall pregnant in the first month trying), so the most you need to wait is 2 months, after this time finances won't be an issue since you'll be ok on your OH's wage :j .

Though... if you're thinking all practical like this, maybe you aren't really ready just yet? Nothing wrong with making sure it's the right time to risk falling pregnant...

What on earth is wrong with being practical when planning a family? This is the time when rational thought is the most important!

defintely try and get some cleared and some money behind you, as pregnancies and babies effect everything, you may not want o go back to work, you may have to leave work due to health reasons, you may need to move, allsorts, so think carefully before you decide what to do
i will be debt free, i will
  • When I got pregnant (planned) I still lived at home, paid £200 monthly to my mum and never had any spare cash (in my mind)

I now rent - £525 pr month, all the blls that go with it £400 pr month and I still don't have any spare cash.

    Having a baby - Priceless.

My finances haven't changed or improved but I have my daughter.

(unfortunaltey my husband didn;t stick around - his loss)

  • There isn't a right time to have a baby unless you are one of the Royal family.

    Go for it, happy conceiving!!!!!!!!

Unless there is the pressing matter of the biological clock tick tick tocking then it would be better for you to leave it a year or so till your practical issues are resolved, certainly re your living situation. When you are pregnant you will often find yourself desperate to get your house in order both in terms of cleaning and organising, but also with other outstanding issues such as bills. You will start worrying about every little thing and wanting everything to be perfect - which it never will be (!) but it will help not to have to do a huge thing, like move house when you should be focusing on and ENJOYING your pregnancy.

You will never be totally ready for your bubba, there will always be something unresolved or slightly less than perfect so don't let your life situation make you leave things too late. But if you can organise things to give yourself a more relaxed pregnancy I would go for it!

It also helps to get into mse ways before you conceive - try to live on your maternity pay budget and figure out what you would have to do to manage and make this your norm. I got into couponing and really watching my shopping budget as well as using cashback sites such as quidco and pigsback - and learning Old Style ways of cooking/cleaning etc, all when I got pregnant and I was very suprised at exactly how much I had been wasting before and how it was relatively easy (and quite good fun!) to economise.

There is never a "right time" - who knows what will happen tomorrow, never mind in a year!! I would personally NOT want to move house with a baby - so would get that sorted first, but saying that, plenty of people manage it!!

Just remember not only babies are expensive - but the older they get the more expensive they get! You will never have saved enough money to cover everything - and there will always be unexpected costs along the way. My DH & I thought we were skint when we have two good wages coming in, I had DD1 and we went to one salary - we have survived 11 years and two children by juggling money and MSE'ing. I reckoned I "couldn't afford it" - but then, how many really can??
