Tesco card reader

The card is one of the first things I received, long before I even received my one-time-only registration number, and I didn't even order it. I'm rather confused, and feel I'm going to be just as disappointed when I find I can't send payments with this card. I don't have a scanner I'm afraid, so will have to describe it. The image on it is of a sunset (purple and orange). "TESCO Personal Finance" at the top left. "Instant Access Savings" on the right, followed by the embossed card number, name and expiry dates in the usual places. The rear has the magstripe and signature strip, again in the usual places, displaying the link and Cashline logos. I'm stumped!
In spite of the lack of chip, the online banking facility still allowed me to go and order a card reader.0 -
The card you have is an instant access savings card mentioned here
http://www.tescofinance.com/personal/finance/savings/savingsaccounts/instantaccess/banking-in-tesco-stores.html
it enables you to pay in and withdraw cash/cheques at tesco stores.
If you have ordered the card reader online you should also receive a chip and pin card. This is sent seperately and there may be several days between you receiving the card reader and the card.
If you haven't received the card within say a week of receiving the reader then call Tesco Personal Finance to find out why.0 -
I got so fed up with Tesco banking system then I withdraw my savings.
I needed a different password for savings account and credit card account. I couldn't pay my bills from a savings account online. For example I'd transferred money from my Halifax account, into my Tesco savings account, to pay my Tesco Credit Card but the system wasn't set up for such a transaction - eh? How's that for efficienty. Between phoning them several times, sent letters, received replies and only ended up angry and frustrated and with a charge for late payment. Several really irate phone calls later, they waived the late payment charge and gave me a little bit more into the bargain. They said they'd send me a card reader, which they did but it took weeks.
If I forgot my password (because I'm no spring chicken) it took days for another to come through. It wouldn't let me use a password I'd use before. Everything seemed to be so secure that the system wasn't designed with the customer in mind. (IMHO).
As I said, I closed my savings account and now have a card reader (sent after I'd closed the account). Do I just throw it away, or can it serve any other purpose because after all the hassle, I ain't sending it back to them?0 -

Just keep it, you might be able to use it with another account. Mine works with nationwide, so I have my tesco one at work and the nationwide one at home.0 -
Just keep hold of it. A number of banks have implemented the same technology to use on-line banking, and it wouldn't surprise me if others followed suit. When your bank finally does, you've got a spare, or one you can keep at work, etc.0

Always glad I post on the Martin Lewis website - somebody always comes back with wisdom. Thank you helping_hubby & wizk1 for very useful advice. :T I'll hold on to the reader now in the hope that I can use it in the future.
Apologies for being late in responding to you but the past couple of days have been really hectic (for a change!). xx0 -
Nationwide, Nat West, RBS and Tesco card readers are all interchangeable.
The Tesco account is a svangs account, not a current account, so like most savings accounts is not designed for bill payments. Rightly or wrongly that's what C/As are for.
Tesco processes are cr*p, but once you finally get it all set up, and use it for what it's intended, it works.
and it's one of the few non-High street big 5 that has FULLY implemented Faster Payments. A big plus.0 -
I am just applying for a Tesco Internet Saver acct and saw that I need to apply for a card reader.
Are they free or chargeable .. and are there still delays in getting them ?
thanks0 -

The card and reader are free.
I don't know what the current delivery time is but I think it has improved from the early days.0
