• I think I should advise readers that I do not charge for giving advice and writers on this site should refrain from casting doubt as to the integrity of others without taking the trouble to contact them first to clarify the true position. "Fermi" should apologise on this site for attempting to defame someone he/she has never had any dealings with or had contact with.

As for Mackenzie Hall it is advisable for ALL people who have had a bad experience with them to contact the Office of Fair Trading. They have to have a consumer credit licence to operate and the more complaints can only lead to a possibility of investigation, or when renewal of the licence occurs a possible refusal.
• Didn't see any attempt by fermi to defame you! Just offering alternative advice- which, i may add, i would take over something you did not offer!

• I'm a newbie on here, I too got one of these SMS messages on my landline today. Being naturally suspicious I googled MH and am thankful I did. I have checked all my Credit files today and there's nothing outstanding. I'm a member of Credit Expert anyway so they always send me alerts if anything happens on my report. They're probably after my exhusband for numerous debts he had. I paid off all the debt he left me with, so I'm assuming I just ignore this company and let them write although I've moved twice since I divorced him but I kept my number.

It sounds like they just enjoy bullying people.

That is, indeed, the best course of action, wb, but be warned - they are persistent little blighters.

does anyone know if mackenzie hall have an email address for correspondence, if so can you tell me. On 25th february mackenzie hall was told by trading standards to send me details of said debt owing from 1991,as of today nothing as been received, could this be because they know said debt is barred and they was previously told in writing back in 2004. should i apply for a cca from them so i can see details for myself. mackenzie hall by right are obliged to send details if asked for free of charge if not,i suppose i would heve to send the £1 payment and hope they do not see it as a payment off debt.

MacKenzie Hall's website still seems to be 'under construction' so can not give you an email address - the last one I had was blackhorse@mackenziehall.co.uk but, personally, I wouldn't waste your time, am. You would only end up by giving them your email address - yet another chance for them to 'harass' you.
Just go back to Trading Standards and tell them that MacKenzie Hall have not responded to Trading Standards' request. They will, certainly, know how to deal with MH.

Good afternoon dm

Most of us, on this forum, have come here because we have experienced, or are experiencing, problems with debt, and the associated problems with dealing with the burgeoning, and not always professional, industry of 'Debt Collection'.
This is an 'Open Forum' and, as such, is open to all. Many of those who post here are professional debt/financial advisers - either working for the Debt Counselling Charities, or, and there are several, employees of Private Debt Management Companies. The remainder of us are just normal people, who try to share their own experiences so that others can avoid the pitfalls that can, so easily, be encountered by those who find themselves confronted with 'debt' - often for the first time - and are unsure of how to 'deal with it'.
Also, and again by virtue of the 'openness' of this forum, it will inevitably attract its fair share of 'Trolls', who take some pleasure in misleading and insulting posters, thereby often depriving them of the type of help that they came here for in the first place.
Finally, there are those who post here for 'personal gain' - often promoting the type of 'ambulance chasing' company whose only aim is to make money out of the misfortune of others.
It really does not matter which of those categories you fall into - providing that any advice, even criticism, that you give is made openly, for others to agree or disagree with, but predominately made for the benefit of the poster who asks the question, and others in the same, or similar situation.
Yes - we do tend to be a 'suspicious' bunch here, but hopefully for the right reasons. It is, actively, discouraged to 'invite' posters to contact you directly with problems, other than through the normal 'pm' route.
Sometimes, our response to the 'contact me first' type of posts may appear, to people who haven't been here long, as a bit of a 'rebuff'. This, however, could not be further from the truth - if advice is openly given, then, if that 'advice' is incorrect, it can be corrected, whereas if an individual relies totally on private communication with one person, that individual may end up with limited, or even misleading, advice.
Since very few of us, myself included, are professional debt advisers - we are all subject to making mistakes, and are learning all of the time.
Fermi is one of this site's most respected posters - his 'advice' is always backed up with well researched information, and cemented by his own experiences.
Whilst I do not, for one moment, wish to cast any aspersion on your own reasons for posting here - indeed I hope that you prove to be an equally invaluable source of advice and information, as the good 'fermi' - I must echo fermi in advising all posters to be very careful when another poster suggests that they should contact them directly, and not through the forum boards.

Thank you for letting me express my opinion.

If it's over 6 years ago with no acknowledgement of the debt in writing or by payment from her, then you can just send the letter at the end of this link:

http://www.nationaldebtline.co.uk/england_wales/factsheet.php?page=25_liability_for_debts_and_the_limitation_act

MH will know it's 'statute barred' so all they can do is ask very politely. If they've already been told then you might just conclude that they can be ignored and save the postal costs.
