What was in a stocking 70-80 years ago?

My gran is nearly 82 and was reminiscing about what was in her stocking when she was a little girl. She remembered a tangerine a new thruppenny or sixpenny . That started me thinking I want to replicate the stocking she had as a child as much as poss for this Xmas. The fruit is easy, I thought of a coin (maybe one of the 50ps with the writing on them) as a substitite for the money, but what else would have been in it. I don't want to ask again cos I don't want her to guess what I'm doing so wondered if anyone could help. Thanks

Ashes - if you'd been naughty.
This happened to Mr TM's nanny. One year she's accidentally broken the porcelain doll she'd been given for her birthday so the father told her she was so naughty, she'd only get ashes at Xmas. That's just what the poor 7yo did get - and nothing else. She NEVER forgot it0 -

We used to get unshelled nuts in our stockings also, no nutcracker tho. What good was that in the middle of the night when you woke up?
