You mentioned swivel screens in an earlier post jazabelle
I've noticed HP have released swivel laptops in the past but you might only find them secondhand now.IAAR/IAAMM/MFTMFAQ/IOA6BH0 -

How about this instead please? I think it has better specs than the Samsung R530?
Can anyone advise me if this would be capable of simple video editing, please. Transferring my camcorder mini tapes to DVD. I'm going to connect my camcorder to a DVD recorder, burn tapes to DVD, then use the DVD on laptop to then edit.0 -
That's more like it, certainly better value for money than your previous choice. You haven't actually said what you'll be using it for but that will handle most everything except modern 3d games
Thank you. I don't really play games. Maybe very occasionly The Sims 2, but not often.
It's mostly for the internet and office, but I like things to load quickly.You mentioned swivel screens in an earlier post jazabelle

Ooh, good to know. I haven't come across any so far.
They seem like a good idea, they should have more of them!"There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something better tomorrow." - Orison Swett Marden0 -
I'd steer clear of HP if I were you;
Anyway, if you can swing 50 quid more I'd get this;

Carlitos, thank you for the link. Most reviews are for but worryingly, some very disappointing reviews.0

It's too late, I ordered one.
For anyone else interested - I got it direct from the HP website through Quidco for 8% cash back, and a code for 5% off. Not bad!
My current laptop is a toshiba, which is shown as one of the top ones - and it's not doing well at all. It still works, but lots of faults with it."There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something better tomorrow." - Orison Swett Marden0 -
Cool jazabelle did you get the same model you linked to in your previous post? Best of luck with it, I hope it proves to be a great machine.IAAR/IAAMM/MFTMFAQ/IOA6BH0

£449, but with 13% off! Thanks for the help everyone."There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something better tomorrow." - Orison Swett Marden0 -

No worries. And yes, unfortunately, but I've been looking for a Sub £500 laptop for a while now, and it seems this is the case with most cheap, but powerful laptops. I've decided that I'm just going to have to make a choice in the end, because I've been holding out for a gem for a long while, but it seems they're hard to come by.
But if people really don't mind about brand, you can go on eBay and find some £500ish Core i5 and i7 laptops with brands such as Acer, HP and Dell.
Something worth looking into (if brand is not a problem)0 -
hi all,
Two Advents down, I am now on the hunt for a new laptop around the £400 mark. From a starting point of pretty much zero, I have managed to glean some useful info off this thread and from friends and think my spec is now smth like:
3-4GB RAM
120GB HDD minimum, pref more
Screen 15.4/.6"
CD/DVD burner
battery life around 2.5h
portablility/weight not a big issue
integrated graphics card should be fine as I'm not going to be doing video or gaming stuff
My main query is re processors. Don't think I need to go as far as i3, i5 etc, but is there a significant difference between the Intel Core 2 Duo and the Pentium Dual Core (presumably the celeron is to be avoided??)? Have googled, but didn't really get me much further.
Am looking at Acer and Toshiba (definitely NOT Advent : -)
Any words of wisdom or warning much appreciated as i need to get one asap and not procrastinate for too much longer!
Thanks0
