Obviously I dont want to pay over the odds for what I get but I would rather pay a bit more and get something that is good/will last etc than save a few quid. She isn't a gamer but will want to live stream TV and music as well as skype, surfing etc. Oh! and hopefully write the odd essay! Please would you offer any opinions on what to look for/ suggest any models
Cheers
There is no guarantee as to how long any machine will last these days. So I choose 'easy to maintain' brands at the best possible price. Have never paid more than £250 for any machine. They are all still working. The oldest being five years old and some others perhaps three or four.
Only worth spending more if you have specific facilities in mind.
Check out my post on the previous page for a decent low end machine.
Dabs Outlet had a basic ACER for £250 yesterday(Now up to £275) which you could have paired with a 3 year ACER Advantage Warranty(including Accidental Damage) for £32. Not sure I would recommend the machine at the £275 price point though.
Toshibas also have reasonably priced extended Warranties; some with added Data Recovery options. Perhaps important for a panicking student.0 -

It'll do for what you want it for but for that price I'd be looking at an i3 processor myself (like this for example)
Same spec, but cheaper: Acer Aspire 5749 2354G50Mnkk for £319.98
Acer AcerAdvantage extended service agreement - 3 years - pick-up and return Accidental damage included** £31.99
Type - Extended service agreement
Service Included - Parts and labour
Location - Pick-up and return
Full Contract Period - 3 years ( from original purchase date )
Repair Time - 5 business days
** Accidental damage to the screen will require a 100 Euro plus VAT excess charge.0 -

I actually bought one of them for a friend. £250 from Argos Outlet. Sold out now. Still had what looked the original plastic protector attached. She's happy.0
