normally there is a procedure for this:
verbal warning, written warning, second written warning then dismissal.
do you have a copy of the contract/company hand book where it states that this is gross msiconduct?
If not, you could have a case against them for unfair dismissal, surely?
What kind of sites were you looking at, perhaps the content of the sites could be a factor in their case?£10 extra a day in June challenge - £300  / £10 extra a day in July challenge - £150 / £10 extra a day in August - £325 (helped by giving up smoking :A ) /A Payment a day challenge (starting 1 Sept...)0 -
I think you need to:
1. Sign on so that things like JSA; housing benefit; council tax; tax credits etc can be paid ASAP. Ring the jobcentre you can fill in forms over the phone.
2. Can you change mortgage to interest only for a bit
3. You need to see CAB asap and if paying CC a problem then get ready to offer token payments
4. Get CV ready and get job hunting! look at job websites; do you have any industry contacts/friends
5. Post a SOA on here so that people can pick it apart and show you where savings can be made for the time being.
6. If you are depressed you need to see your GP. Also as someone said samaritans are good (you can use their email service if you dont want to talk over phone); or of course this site!
Are you a union member? did you get a verbal warning/written warning about internet useage? This doesnt seem fair, surely you should have an opportunity to correct your mistake?0 -

I totally agree with this post. Something isn't right here, your employer hasn't followed the basic procedure for discipline.
Have you posted something about your company on a internet forum which they found out about, surely if you are only browsing on the bbc news/MSE or formula one site for example, this surely isn't gross misconduct.
You need advice and today.

Skintnow, Please dont be so hard on yourself. I think they are being very unfair in that they dont take into consideration your work ethic and the fact that you didnt know the rule existed. Look at it as a fresh start and dont be scared. I resigned from the worst job in the world, I had a lot of debt and was ill through hating the job and my boss. Was a very isolated position and I couldnt even talk to anyone, even HR as they were drinking buddies with my boss!! I left and temped (there are always temp positions available somewhere) for 2 months until I got my confidence back and landed a nice job on more money than I was on originally. Leaving the company now for a lower paid job in a better company (hoping to climb the ladder in there) but the point where I am trying to get to is that it isnt a door closing it is a new start. Do you really want to work for a company that treat you the way they have treated you?
Please dont think this is the end it is only the beginning!! You sound very employable so I bet you that you wont be without a permanent position very long.0 -
(((((((((hugs))))))))))) to you
It will be okay, i know it doesn't fell like it at the moment.
You said you'll be getting a reference? May i suggest that you get in contact with the job agency's straight away?

hi jo thank you for taking time to post....just normal websites...nothing smutty or anything like that..ebay..bbc news...harmless stuff...i do have a copy of the dismissal procedure they gave me yesterday....and its in there...what fair usage is i dont know?....i know i was wrong and have admitted that....i wish i could turn back the clock0 -
Its funny you find the strength from somewhere, life is so precious and the urge for survival kicks in. I found just writing my problems down helped as my head was like cotton wool and with so much going on I just couldnt make the necessary decisions. Sometimes you have to reach the bottom in order to rebuild a better life, see yourself as a project to work on!
I see many many people in the psych system who have social stressors e.g crap housing; no cash - its such a common problem and makes people ill. I also see those that have everything but work in jobs they hate and that makes them ill too. The human body can only take so much before it shuts down. unfortunately when the brain shuts down the resulting fog makes any necessary decisions difficult and emotion takes the place of logic.
You really should have been warned before it got to this stage0 -

Skintnow, don't tell us who are employer is, but is it a large company, I find it very difficult to believe that they haven't followed the procedure for discipline, and given the fact you say "what is fair usage of the internet?". I think you have a case, DO NOT HAND THAT LETTER IN, and phone the CAB today or phone ACAS, they will advise you
