There are times when I quite fancy a can of coke. If there are 28 cans in the cupboard then I will probably have one. If there is just one can left I probably wouldn't.
Equally there are times when I need to go to the local shop and quite fancy going in the car rather than walking. I can see a situation where if someone had a full tank of petrol in their car then they would drive but if they only had a little bit then they would walk.
What's the problem with that?
I _still_ don't think the suggestion is a good one, though, as it means you have a chance of needing to buy petrol when not near the cheapest place.
oh my dear gggggoooooooooodddddddd
I can't believe that I'm entering into a conversation with someone that does psycho analysis on his coke purchasing & consumption habits.
I can't believe that anyone would let their coke stock in the cupboard drop below 32 cans. What if you're REALLY thirsty over the weekend, your car has only 15 mile of fuel in it, the closest shop is 20 miles away, you have no Guilders left and you've sold your flux capacitor to the Iranians.
It doesn't bear thinking about

I'm now confused as to who is having a laugh, who is being serious, who understands and who doesn't, who is being ironic and who is being post-ironic.0

I sold my flux capacitor last week to a dodgy nigerian squirrel.. i'm still waiting for my 1000 gallons of high quality diesel to be delivered and then i'm sorted...
i've been half watching this thread and it is complete and utter tosh..
last night, i had a full tank of fuel, and the car sat on my driveway all night, and not once was i tempted to get into it and drive anywhere... i decided my time would be better spent failing miserably at the local pub quiz, where i consumed some beer, and peanuts.. fuel for man obviously that is!
now, when it comes to my coke habits.. well.. if there is one can left in the cupboard (actually i never buy cans, but we'll stick with this scenario), i'll drink it, and then go buy more at any shop i want, because i never only have 20 miles of fuel left in my car...
Buy Fuel, Use Fuel, Buy More Fuel.
not, sit down and work out what fuel i need, buy a miniscule amount on monday, and then thursday, because i had an emergency, and my sister was in hospital, i ran out of fuel on the motorway and looked like a numpty...
yeah.. first option seems more logical....0 -
It's not hard to work out while standing at the pump how much you need for the week surely?
If it's over a full tank you just fill up, if you have 5 journeys to make at say 35-40 miles a journey then buy 5 x 40miles worth of petrol.
It encourages you to not waste it by driving when you could walk, it also ensures you stay light footed whilst you are driving and it doesn't mean you are driving around with a tank full of 'spent cash' that you could spend on other things.
Makes total sense to me.
Going Mad!0 -
Walking is good , but i find that i am spending an inordinate amount of money on shoe leather after just one weeks worth of walking to work down the A50

Have never understood the A5. Why is it nowhere near the M5?0

Yes it is...
my diary can change at the drop of a hat... so, if i only have enough for my office trip, because i think i have nothing on, what is going to happen, when i end up having to drive to london maybe, or glasgow, or stafford, or bristol....
I'm one of these people that have to drive a lot for a living.. i'm sure that i drive a lot more than your 12k in a year!.
Next friday i'm going to gloucester.. Now, if i go the normal route, i'll be fine, but what if i'm diverted if the motorway is shut, but i've only filled up enough to get me there and back, by your method, which you still think is amazing... so, i've got a 50 mile detour, and the only place to fill up is a really expensive place, and my money saving is straight out of the window..0 -
Im starting to think Going Mad is actually fadeaway in disguise, im sure you remember him, your logic is pants.
You mention saving the money by having the money in your bank account rather than in your petrol tank, therefore:
My car takes about £60 worth a diesel and if i left this in one of those nice A&L 10% accounts I would get £6 interest in a year on this money, which is 12p a week, so if I keep my money in my account im saving myself 12p a week in lost interest, i have never ever worried about saving 12p on a £60 purchase before and anyone that does worry about such small amounts of money needs more help than the ladies and gents of MSE can ever give you.
You mention putting enough fuel in to last you "x" trips and Mr Moo has already called you on this one, so what happens if you get stuck in traffic? bang goes your fuel and you end up paying another 10p a litre at a service station, assuming you can get to one before your fuel runs out.
You claim
"By being lighter on the throttle my car goes from averaging 33mpg to 40mpg
Now that really adds up - especially when you work it out over 1000 years."
A thousand bleeding years!!!! are you on drugs hell if you took that example if i put £1 a day away in my piggy bank for the next thousand years I would have £365000. Do you intend to live/drive for the next thousand years, if you do please let us all know your secret as im sure we would all like to live a tad longer.
As far as encouraging people to walk more my round trip to work is 70miles so thats not an option.
One final thing before I get the steaming hump, what if you just have enough fuel for your 5 trips and no more in your tank and whilst you are waiting to fuel up on friday the price goes up by a penny or two, bang goes your "money saving"
Your argument has more flaws than the empire state building, and before you pick me up on that its a play on words.
The bearLive each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0
