Don't buy your petrol in £'s !!

Hopefully I've posted this in the right section - I've a stack of money saving ideas and thought I'd toss this one in ...

I've stopped buying my petrol in £'s at the pump and started buying it in litres. Sound strange? Heres what I mean.

I know that Mon to Friday I drive 40 miles a day to and from work, so heres the calculation I use..

(I keep things rounded for simplicity)

My car does approx 40 miles to the gallon
There are approx 5 litres in a gallon.

So I need 5 litres a day to get to work.

I then (as I'm filling the tank) work out other journeys needed in the week etc etc and they simply work out how many litres I need to purchase for the next week.

By doing this weekly it allows me time to shop around for the cheapest petrol and also ensures I buy only the bare minimum of petrol for the week.

I buy my fuel in exact litres because that is how I earn points on my loyalty card, I see no point in 'topping off' to bring the payment total to an exact figure if I will not gain anything on my card.
I used to just buy for the week but ended up making a seperate single journey that would throw my calculations out and end up having to top up my tank again so these days I just fill up at some point after my gauge shows to be under the quarter.

Just to be a bit pedantic 1 gallon equals 4.546 litres which would thow your calcutaions off by a bit the more you have to put in.

I just know that this is a wind up, but I'll take the bait. :)

How do you shop around? .... In the car? .... On foot? .... By telephone?

How much time do you spend shopping around in a given week?

And after shopping around and buying just the bare minimum of fuel each week, please explain just how much, on average you save in cold hard cash in any given week?

    :)

OK..... So there is no real shopping around and at the heart of your money saving idea is the idea that people should buy the cheapest fuel locally... which is common sense.

But other than the known fact that a reduction in weight will result in saving a few pence, how do you save money by only buying the fuel you need for the week?

28 days fuel is 28 days fuel and I just don't see how buying 7 days fuel at a time saves money?

    How does this work?

At Tesco you get 1 Clubcard point per £1 spent and at Sainsburys you get 2 Nectar Points per £1 spent. So if you fill up with x litres that won't necessarily make whole pounds. For instance if I fill up my car and the pump clicks at £55.95 then I always top up to £56.00 to get the extra Clubcard point. Even if the pump clicks off at a low pence figure I always shove extra in to get to the next £.

  • I use a variance of the OPs method.

I wait until I need some fuel and then I fill up the tank of my car until it is absolutely brimming the neck. & then I pay for the fuel and drive away.

To do this, it is absolutely vital that you have the means to pay for your fuel first.

Shell and Texaco loyalty cards give 1 point per litre ;)

I'm with Tojo Ralph. What is the point in wasting time working out how much fuel you need for the week and just putting that in? You only need one or two extra journeys to throw it all out of synch. I just get the email from https://www.petrolprices.com and then when my tank is low fill it to the brim at the nearest cheap garage.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die
