Sounds like the person on the phone may have been talking about your new circumstances now that you wife is working. But I would check it out all the same.

once you get your tax credits and partners wages then you may not qualify for housing and council tax benefit, but until the tax credits come through you should do.

Based on a very rough working your applicable amount (the money you should have coming in as a bare minimum) is £422.91 weekly

You shoud get £257.87 weekly in tax credits (based on two child - one with high rate DLA and just your wifes wages £1241.00 monthly before tax and NI)

making your total weekly income £562.68, leaving you £155.63 'spare' out of this the council expect you to put 65% towards your rent and 20% towards your council tax.

So you should be able to put £101.00 towards your rent and £31.00 towards your council - ONCE YOU HAVE YOUR TAX CREDITS AND WAGES COMING IN!

Without the tax credits and no wages at all (just your child benfit and child DLA) you should definatley get your rent and council tax paid.

As council tax is worked out weekly it will be based on your circumstance from when you put in the claim - and they will take into account your change from this Monday coming. So you should have at lease a few weeks rent ans council tax due from before you wife started work.

Work on the council as a priorty as they tend to be slow! go in asap and tell then that your wife has started work, ask for an update on your claim and what they still need from you. if the cheque is what you should be getting ask about a DHP payment, this is where the council can top up what they are paying for people in hardship.

You may end up going back and forth between the council and the JCP for a while, but its wuicker this way than to wait for them to do it themselves!!

    good luck.

ps. dont asume the the housing benefit office will inform your rent officer of your housing benefit claim.

Make an appointment to speak to the housing office direct, tell them your now get housing benefit and that you are willing to make an arrangement for the arrears - they will be more understanding if the dont have to come to you! I would start off offering £5.00 per week for the arrears ad work from there.

Inform them you can only start once you wife has her first wage.

Is your youngest on middle or high rate care component as well as the mobility component of DLA? If so you should be claiming Carers Allowance for looking after him

Simone's right - why not consider claiming Incapacity Benefit if you have sufficient National Insurance Contributions and also possibly DLA.
I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too!
  • No help with the financial side of things, sorry, but please give yourself some time to get used to the ADD meds and accept whatever help you are offered in the meantime. My meds made a huge difference to the way I live my life, but the whole thing was a bit of an upheavel and I took a lot of adjustments, but you will get there, I promise

PM me if you want to chat about the ADD stuff, having been there myself
