Sex of the baby and ultrasound scans

We were told a boy with our first, apparently there was definiately a "winkie" her words. With our second we were told 80% girl, so even though we just got on with the fact we were having a girl, I privately reminded myself it was still 80%, even though everyone else was saying its given. Oh and as you can see by my signature, a little lady she was.
Congratulations by the way, whatever sex you have.0 -
Told at my 20 wk scan it was a boy. I did not buy any blue things as I did not see any nice boy clothes in the shop, kept looking at all the lovely pink things and just bought white babygrows. Anyway went into labour and several long hours later out popped a girl I nearly fell off the table when they told me. They do get it wrong at times. When i was pregnant the 2nd time I asked again at my 20wk scan was told a boy but just thought I will wait and see and it was a boy.February 2013 NSD - 40

I'm a midwife and just wondering why the only scan you get would be at 12 weeks. If you are only getting one scan it should be the one at around 20 weeks.
Have no ideaThere's probably some reason for it (dunno about the ears thing though? is that true??!!!!). Have to say though that if I had to wait 20 weeks before getting my first scan I would be a bag of nerves...maybe that's why they do it at 12 weeks. This is just my particular trust by the way....as I say, go over the Forth Road Bridge and you get the 2 scans plus they tell you the sex if you want - it's madness!!!!!

I am not a health professional or anything but I'm pretty sure there are things that can't be checked properly at such an early stage as 12 weeks? If they can't properly tell the sex that early how can they check the internal organs, brain etc? I thought that was why the scan was performed at 20 weeks (as it is here in Hants) as problems can be picked up then. I had a dating scan at 11 weeks, a nuchal scan at 13 weeks then was back again for the 20 week scan, surely if they can do the 'big' scan at 12 weeks they would have done it all in one go or at least combined the nuchal/big scan. Do women in Scotland get offered the Nuchal scan? all women here get it regardless of age - well they did in 2006, I know things can change at the drop of a hat!

Some do get the 20 week, some not. Depends on your NHS trust. Mine's doesn't. At the 12 week scan you get your date, you see the heartbeat and they tell you that baby is where it should be...and that's it!! you go out clutching your pic and countdown the next 28 weeks!
My chum who live across the Forth Road Bridge - which is not that far but a different NHS trust - they get the 12 week like us but then get the 20 to check for any defects etc and also get the option for the sex.
In the maternity place where I was there was a HUGE sign telling you not to ask for the sex if you are in for a later scan as you will not be told. The reason is so they don't get sued and also because they are certain minoritys who prefer a certain sex and it is to stop any 'accidents' happening should the wrong sex be given. Of course in this day and age and with technology and the money, it can be found out anyway.
I had a growth scan at 38 weeks (thought baby was too small as I wasn't measuring correctly - thankfully it was because I am so tall and have such a long torso she had loads of space to grow!!) and I remember saying to the radiographer "oooh don't tell me the sex, I've waited this long!" and also asked her to turn the monitor away when she was near the 'area' and I got sharply told under NO circunstances would I be told...I knew that but I just didn't want it slipping out...instead of 'baby is fine' it could have been 'she is fine' and I really really didn't want to know.0 -
awww when I was pregnent with my youngest child, they told me at the 20 week scan that I was having a girl.. I was elated.. then I had an emergency scan ar 40 weeks and the scanner said" oh, he has a big head"!!!!
I gave birth to a BOY!........... and was really happy with that too!!
Good luck, and enjoy the whole experience xx0 -
I didn't really want to know with DD... But I was scared that if the sonographer asked me if I wanted to know I wouldn't be able to help myself... Thankfully nobody ever asked... and she was a lovely surprise...
This time I recon OH is going to want to know... He can't stand waiting for surprises... And has guessed pretty much every present I've ever bought him... Will just have to wait and see what happens!A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...My Fathers Daughter wrote: »Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.
