Here is the related article on the Institue of Sales Promotion's website......

Further to the ISP's campaign to stop coupon misuse, Tesco has changed its coupon policy, and will now only be accepting coupons if the relevant product is in the shopping basket.

The retailer is currently instructing checkout staff of the change in its policy. Notices will be posted in stores to inform customers of the new rules.
Annie Swift, chief executive of the ISP, says: “Tesco’s policy change is great news for brand owners, many of whom have been put off using coupons because of fears over possible misredemption. There are some retailers, however, who are still allowing consumers to redeem coupons for products they haven’t bought, and we need to get them to rethink their stance.”

The ISP stepped up its campaign against coupon misuse a year ago, and only days ago sent members an email alerting them to potential problems with Tesco’s previous coupon rules, as outlined below.

Consumers save roughly £500m a year by using money off coupons in retailers. However, the ISP believes that far more brands would issue coupons, if they could be sure that they were going to be used properly. Tesco’s move should significantly cut coupon misuse, which will lead to more brands issuing coupons and so more savings for legitimate consumers.

The ISP has had a number of other major successes in its campaign against coupon misuse, including coverage of the issue in the national press and the grocery and marketing trade press, as well as on the highly-influential consumer website moneysavingsexpert.com.

In addition, after discussions with the ISP, online auction site eBay.co.uk clamped down on bulk sales of money-off coupons.

Until now, Tesco had argued that it was impractical to ask its checkout staff to make sure that coupons were only redeemed against the right products. Indeed, the ISP has only just alerted its members to a clause in Tesco’s terms and conditions which stated that “due to the flow of customers at the point of sale, the Buyer’s policy (in accordance with industry practice) is to redeem all coupons presented by customers and not to check non-retailer-specific coupons in supermarkets.”

The T&Cs also said that Tesco would deduct the value of coupons against a brand’s account “without requiring proof of purchase.”

The ISP does not know if Tesco has changed its T&Cs to reflect its new policy yet.

Although Tesco’s policy change is a major victory, the ISP will continue its campaign against coupon misuse. Annie Swift observes: “There are some retailers who are still allowing coupon misredemption by consumers. More significant, however, is the problem of fake coupons. It is too easy to create realistic-looking coupons that may fool consumers or inexperienced checkout staff. We need to find a solution to both these issues if the coupon market is to achieve its full potential.”
  • I don't know if this has been pointed out yet or not as I'm new to this.

Tesco will apparently no longer accept any product vouchers unless you are actually buying that product. This took effect at 15:00 last Saturday 3rd October 2009.
  • All his gobbing off about money off vouchers used as cash at Tesco has led to this clamp down. Everytime he opens his big fat gob about a handy loophole it gets shut down. Doesn't this prize pillock think that just maybe the companies and organisations being duped could also be reading or listening to his irritating, squeaky, little voice.
Soon the banks will start charging for all thier services, like Direct Debits, Standing Orders, overdrafts etc. Why? Well all those customers who racked up £££s of debt for failed DDs, bounced cheques and unautherised overdrafts are getting a wind fall. Ultimately this will be paid for by mugs like me who have been careful not to bounce cheques. Every time he sounds off on tv or radio I cringe, wondering what he's going to wreck now.
    Shut up Lewis!

  • I've read through all 11 pages of this thread but due to the policies keep changing throughout it I'd just like some clarification that I've understood the current policies correctly please!

I only shop at Tesco and Sainsbury's so I'm not interested in the other stores, but as I understand it:
    - you have to buy the specified product for both of these stores
    - some Tescos don't accept internet coupons, some do

Are those right and also do Sainsbury's accept internet coupons? Ta.

    That's about right.

With internet coupons most Tesco and Sainsburys stores should accept them if you buy the product. But there are a few stores which won't take them at all due to previous abuse; I have a Tesco like that near me (not that I shop at Tesco now).:D:rolleyes:

But you do find some Supervisors - in any Supermarket - who'll say 'it's a photocopy'. I even had that accusation once in Sainsburys when I had printed off a coupon ONLY for use at Sainsburys (so clearly one that her employer had helped to originate). I had to insist - and another Supervisor knew about it and said it was fine.
PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

    Debts
    Mum £5/£1500  [STRIKE]Council DUN £80[/STRIKE] :T Council LIN £187.85 :(
    NSD's Dooyoo earning £18.08 :T Slicethepie £5.02 :j Quidco £1.05 :A £15k needed for house deposit :D
    Days until payday :):):):):):):) :):):):):):):) :):):):):):):) :):):):)
  • Does it not strike anyone that this is immoral?? OK the supermarket will take the voucher - but then they will cash it in with the manufacturer for a service that has not been received. By using vouchers against 'other' goods you are implicitly asking the supermarket to cheat.
