How to use coupons as cash discussion

The posters on this thread who deride couponers usually do it out of jealousy more than anything else I imagine. Members such as Couponmad who kindly explain the policies of Tesco and Waitrose out of consideration for other people, are shot down by those who have no understanding or experience of couponing and cannot seem to grasp the fact that it is actual Tesco and Waitrose policy.
It isn't a procedure limited to just the UK. Some stores in America accept coupons without purchasing the product (and some will double up the value of a coupon, or explictly state they will accept it after the expiry date).0 -
Hi Guys.
I agree with the majority here - if the supermarkets are willing to accept coupons, then why not save yourself a couple of pounds.
This will only be the 2nd time I have taken coupons to Tesco, but I will certainly ask the cashier if they would mind scanning my coupons - as my Nanna always says "if you don't ask, you don't get"
On another note, I have noticed today, that most of the vouchers in Martin's list are the ones I printed last week and will not allow me to print again. Could anyone recommend an alternative place for me to locate MOCs?
Thanks!
Glad to help.
On this board, just read the Newspaper Summary every morning (it's there just to inform MSEers about coupons and offers in the daily papers).
Also on this board, check out the Magazine Offers thread a couple of times a week (again, it's there with news of coupons and offers in weekly and monthly mags, occasionally you get coupons worth much more than the magazine costs).
But mainly, get yourself on the Printable Coupons info & chat sticky thread and print the coupons in the first posts there. Also join in the chat if you have time, or at least read the last couple of pages of posts there every day when checking the Newspaper thread. Tons of info about coupons is on the chat thread and we're really friendly on there! Questions like yours would have been answered within minutes on that thread as it's always busy with regulars keen to help.

If Tesco didn't charge the manufacturers for misredeemed coupons, I wouldn't have any issues - it's up to them if they want to give discount. What's wrong is them giving money off and charging someone else.0 -
Dear All
Went to my Tesco at Heath Hayes Cannock yesterday had £6 of coupons sent by Tetley tea for a product I had to return that was faulty. The girl on the till said during her staff training she was told she could not accept any coupons unless I purchased the item. Have Tesco changed there terms in relation to coupons.0 -

Yes, and that's exactly the point. Tesco have been behaving like thugs, taking the coupons for anything and then charging the supplier for everything. The short-sighted greed of people like couponmad walk right into their hands (and I'm truely surprised that Martin Lewis would support discussion of fraudulent behaviour on this site!)
It's interesting that Tesco have now change their "policy" to actually do the legal thing. I guess some small supplier wasn't so small after all and stood up to them... :T0 -

More interesting is the fact that Tesco have NOT changed their policy. Nor have Waitrose.
I wouldn't want people reading your post and thinking the policy has changed when it hasn't.
Both those Supermarkets are still happy to accept coupons for a product they sell, without rifling through your shopping bag to check you've bought the exact item (as they do in Sainsburys).
bowlesbargain - you were just unlucky, it will just be that cashier in that store making a mistake.
I get told that about once every couple of months, usually by a confused cashier. You just need to ask them to call a Supervisor as you believe Tesco policy does allow you to use your coupons anyway. It's a very rare Tesco store that won't accept at least one non-printed coupon.

:TDoes anyone know how Asda reacts to using coupons for cash?
Do they have a policy set up or is it just a case of trying your luck?0 -

They used to allow coupons as cash but they don't now. They stopped that policy last year - so they lost the business of couponers as a result.
So you would have to buy the product to use any coupon there now, unless the cashier doesn't know any better and still allows the old 10% or whatever. If they do they are wrong, but I expect there are several Asda stores who don't know the policy changed last year.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

After reading on here that some people have successfully used Farm Foods vouchers at Tesco (which I usually throw away) took them with me today hoping to get £5.00 off my £50 shop but was told they don't accept them. Just my luck! It's 5 o'clock somewhere!0

If you want, you can get the money refunded on a giftcard if you send the vouchers and your receipts to Tesco at Dundee Customer Service Centre (addy on the Tesco website 'contact us').
A really nice Call Centre employee may also take the trouble to educate your local store about them as well. Tesco DO accept these if you spend the right amount, it's just that some stores don't know - or don't want to know because they don't scan (no barcode = too much hassle and possibly no income 'credit' for the store).PRIVATE 'PCN'?
