Does anyone have an email from Tesco or something official looking about the policy that I can print off to carry around with me just incase we're questioned about it?

    Thanks

You'll find the policy in this thread

There's lots of information on the first few posts (don't forget to thank the posts as a lot of work goes into keeping them up to date).

This is what's been posted from this weeks newletter - looks like Martin is promoting using coupns.

How to use coupons as cash

Some supermarkets will accept money off coupons, even if you're not buying the product they're designed for. For instance, a coupon for £3 off shampoo could get you £3 off a bottle of wine, not just the mag. Yes, it sounds bizarre, but it works!

Which supermarkets let you do it?

It's a case of trial and error, supermarkets’ policies vary store by store and even cashier by cashier. Anecdotal evidence suggests Tesco is most likely to accept this, as long as it actually stocks the relevant product. Asda and Waitrose can be coupon-friendly too, whileSainbury’s and Morrisons are far less accommodating.

This isn't for the easily embarassed though, you need a thick skin to do this: supermarkets aren’t obliged to accept coupons on products they’re not designed for. If they say yes, bonus! If not, chin up, and better luck next time, don't be confrontational, you don't have a right to the discount.

Rapido - that one has been blocked at Tesco unless you buy the product.

Is it just me or does anyone else find this practice a bit "off" ?? It just doesn't seem right to be using a coupon unless you've bought the specific product the coupon is related to.

You try going into Burger King and claiming 10% off a burger with a McDonalds coupon and see how far you get...

McDonalds will actually accept a Burger King coupon ....

just as tesco will accept a sainbury's coupon!

Really? It's news to me (the McDonalds bit, obviously not the Teso part!) but it makes good business sense for ANY company to introduce similar policies re accepting their rivals' vouchers, particularly in the credit crunch.

I think there are quite a few people on this thread who only see things in black and white. There is a grey market you know...;)

that's right I used to work for maccyD many years ago..atho it not widely known and the counter staff like tesco's SA's need training!

but yes they will do any thing to take their rivals business!
  • Been to Tesco (Bournemouth) today and used several coupons that came through my letterbox with junk mail etc. But SA would not accept any internet coupons unless I bought the item. She was very nice but said that they had tightened up on internet coupons recently so she was unable to accept them.
  • Good thing to hear that Tesco is now doing the honourable thing. Maybe they've been challenged for their fraudulent behaviour...

Accepting manufacturer coupons for non-manufacturer items, in CLEAR breach of the coupon T&C's, and then collecting the money through the system was basically subsidising Tesco's profits at the expense of the manufacturer. And there's no excuse for it – all the tills are fully computerised and can check immediately if the coupon is being used correctly. It's just a case of Tesco using their size to bully the smaller manufacturers.

And if any readers here use the self-service checkouts to “get around” this restriction then it's YOU who are committing the fraud! Just because you're small enough to not be worth chasing (yet) doesn't mean it's ok!

Coincidentally there's an article on the bbc website - news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8133834.stm - talking about how people can completely change their moral behaviour when they see others doing the same...

Get this straight - breaching T&C's on coupons is NOT LEGAL! “Getting away with it” does not make it right!

    Hi Guys.

I agree with the majority here - if the supermarkets are willing to accept coupons, then why not save yourself a couple of pounds.

This will only be the 2nd time I have taken coupons to Tesco, but I will certainly ask the cashier if they would mind scanning my coupons - as my Nanna always says "if you don't ask, you don't get"

On another note, I have noticed today, that most of the vouchers in Martin's list are the ones I printed last week and will not allow me to print again. Could anyone recommend an alternative place for me to locate MOCs?

    Thanks!
