How to use coupons as cash discussion

I have to say i love Money Saving Expert, but just want to say how dissappointed i am with Martin for condoning theft.
when you take that coupon to the store and it redeems against the product you haven't bought, the supermarket still charges the cost of that coupon to the Brand.. thus the brand ends up giving you money back thinking you have purchased their product. if this continues brands will stop offering coupons thus meaning when you genuinly want to use one you cant. You wouldn't still 50p out of someones purse, why steal 50p from a brand
As carriebradshaw says, stores have been doing this for MANY, MANY YEARS. Manufacturers know it happens as well, they don't like it but the big stores like Tesco have the clout & sell so many of their products that they can 'get away with' redeeming some coupons.
It isn't 'right' that the stores do this, but they still do. So why on earth would a good moneysaver not pay with coupons, knowing what we know? The customer is not doing anything wrong, no fraud or stealing is involved when a customer offers a pile of coupons as payment if Tesco or Waitrose choose to accept them.
Then, as TruthOrDare says, what Tesco or Waitrose do with the coupon is up to them TBH.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

Coupons are part of a marketing campaign. The fact that you print off or cut out the coupon, carry it in your wallet or purse etc means that you have taken some sort of notice of the marketing. If you don't then choose to purchase the product then the campaign has backfired a bit on the brand, but in no way is it fraud or stealing to use that coupon if a retailer takes it.ilovefreegle.org - give it away don't throw it away0

The only time i tried to use a coupon in Tesco it didn't work, i had a valid Purina cat food voucher that they had sent to me in the post. I buy that cat food every week!
The lady on the till said it wouldn't scan and Tesco's don't accept these type of vouchers! It was £5 off a £8 bag of cat food.
I was not happy and since have not felt confident in using coupons in there0 -
I usually shop with Tesco on line and use the online discount codes. I have however been diligently saving up money off coupons in the mean time. On Saturday I visited the Tesco at Brighouse and got to the checkout with £101 of groceries. I got some coupons out of an envelope and handed them to the young man and he scanned them without question. He saw that I had some more coupons in my envelope and asked me did I want to see if the rest of the coupons would scan as well? Of course I was more than happy to oblige! I handed him the rest and watched (in amazement) the total decrease to £50.71.
All the coupons were original manufacturer ones, not Internet print outs and I believe that some were possibly out of date (as I hadn't had time to check).
Thanks to everyone on the forum for giving me the courage to try it. I suppose I'd better save up some more coupons now!!!
:jA BIG thank you everyone who takes the time to reply my posts :hello:0 -

1. If it didn't scan, she should have keyed in the number manually.
2. Tesco sell Purina, so they should have taken it, unless they suspected mis-use.
Please don't let that experience put you off using coupons.Like good food and drink?
Try Hotel Chocolat and Baileys.

I have used coupons as cash at Tesco but last weekend I was told by the girl on the till that from 2nd February Tesco stopped taking them unless you bought the product. Anyone else been told this.:eek:0

I have used coupons on the last two occasions this month at my local Tescos and I have noticed that the SA's have made a big point of checking that I had purchased the goods. Luckily I had, so that saved me some embarrassment! Going to go to the bigger Tescos near where I work, so I will try out some coupons there on the Self Scan tills, without buying the product.0

Well done on your shop - just be careful about those out of date coupons or you could find the stores policy gets changed. There is no need to run outside
For better seeing,
Nor to peer from a window.
Rather abide at the center of your being.

My Tesco is the same, they won't accept coupons unless you bought the product. That is why I have returned to shopping with Asda.
However, you should not feel embarrassed, you are just following national policy and doing nothing wrong.0 -
