  • I've been handing over a coupon for something I've not bought since reading you could do this in Tesco on this website. I went into my local Tesco today & as usual, handed over a coupon, which was accepted. However, I had to go back in later as I'd forgotten something, & this time the cashier said that they couldn't accept coupons for something you've not bought. Seems a change of policy has taken place between my two visits - only a couple of hours apart. Has anyone else found this? :(

It isn't a change in policy. You just got a cashier who doesn't know the policy. Ask for a supervisor and they will tell the cashier to put them through.
  • Thanks for that. I thought I'd try to use one again next time I'm in there as that might be the case. I have been served by that cashier previously without any problem though - & I know of one I have to avoid as well.
  • using money off vouchers, i have regulary used coupons in tesco, but last thursday i was told at check out that you can only use coupons if you are buying the item.

I was told the same on Saturday, and I had previously used vouchers with no problem. The SA had to check with the supervisor, so the policy must have only recently changed.
  • i couldn't belive my eyes when i was browsing the site and discovered the tesco coupon policy so i emailed customer services last week, asking them to fully explain company policy on branded coupons (not store-specific) and this was the reply i received on feb 24 -

I would like to thankyou for your email in relation to our policy on accepting coupons in store.

All Tesco specific coupons display the Tesco logo. We'll only accept these at the till if you buy the product shown on the coupon at the time.

We're happy to accept a non-Tesco product coupon even if you don't buy the item. But, the coupon must be in date and Tesco must sell the product.

If you present more than one identical coupon you need to purchase the same number of products. This also includes coupons printed from the Internet. Some of these vouchers may be subject to acceptance at the discretion of your Store Manager. I hope this has helped to clarify things for you.

Thank you for taking the time to contact us and if I can help any further please do not hesitate to contact me at
    customer.service@tesco.co.uk.

    Kind Regards

still dubious, i went in-store yesterday (friday) and approached customer services to query it, armed with my email. the assistant was lovely, knew exactly what i was talking about before i'd finished my question and told me all SAs have been fully briefed. i filled the trolley and saved £20 off a £50 shop. to top it off, the SA asked where i'd found the coupons and i gave her this site's address. she thanked me and explained her daughter and their family is struggling financially due to illness. money-saving and people-helping all in a tesco shop, aaah!

Have just been to tesco after seeing this and was told the following.

This is their old policy and their new one is as follows
we will take one coupon per item brought EG if you buy a an item and have a coupon you can use it, if you buy 10 of them and have 10 coupon then you can use the 10.
If you have coupons for something and you do not buy that item we will only except one coupon per shop and that is all that will be excepted.

This is what they say is their policy is and they phoned up to check this before they confirmed it with me. I was there while they were on the phone and heard the call. This is the Portsmouth stores that I have been in. HTH
Thanks for any help and advice given

I think it depends on where you are, some checkout ops have their own rules, on Sunday I was in Tesco in Danestone (Aberdeen) I had bought some dog food and gave the woman a coupon for dog food she then looked at the coupon and looked at my bag to make sure I had actually bought the product. I was fizzing, to put it mildly as I felt I was being treated as a crim.
    Like good food and drink?
    Try Hotel Chocolat and Baileys.

I have to say i love Money Saving Expert, but just want to say how dissappointed i am with Martin for condoning theft.

when you take that coupon to the store and it redeems against the product you haven't bought, the supermarket still charges the cost of that coupon to the Brand.. thus the brand ends up giving you money back thinking you have purchased their product. if this continues brands will stop offering coupons thus meaning when you genuinly want to use one you cant. You wouldn't still 50p out of someones purse, why steal 50p from a brand

what are you talking about? Tesco have had this policy in place for over 20 years, that I know of, in fact thinking back I found out about using coupons without buying the product when I did my first shop in there which was when I bought my first house and that's nearly 25 years ago !

Martin isn't condoning stealing, because it isn't stealing. It is official shop policy.

What the shop does with the coupon after you have handed the coupon over is none of your concern. If they decide they want to redeem it, that is up to them.
