My husband needs help!

My husband is having major problems with his laptop, can anyone help??
I'm gonna copy what he has told me to say so blame him if it doesn't make sense! ;)

"can you work this out?

I start the laptop up and I get this:-"

An unauthorised change wass made to windows

Windows has discovered a change that will result in limited windows functionality

Use the link below to find out how to fix windows

"I then click earn more online, then another box appears"

x http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkId=65174

x Windows cannot find http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkId=65174. Make sure you typed the name correctly and try again.

"Then a window opens with :-"

http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/

"Then another window opens"

You may be a victim of software counterfeiting.

" To solve this problem I have to restore my computer to a diffrent poin (date), which is a pain then Mcafee isn't protecting the PC then.

When I go to Microsoft.com it takes through some instructions that I need to get to in Command Prompt, the trouble is windows isn't not on and I have no start button. I go into safe mode and I can get into Command prompt from there, and when I type the instructions, in, the PC says I can not do this is Safe Mode

Please help!!! :D

    What version of Windows?

Why not restore? As far as I can tell you'll be doing yourself a favour by not having McAfee on, at least then you can put something decent on it.

McAfee told him to take system restore off because he's using Vista.

You couldn't pay me to use McAfee (speaking as someone who used to, and still can, get it free). I'd rather pay to use Eset Smart Security (as I am doing) rather than use McAfee for free, make of that what you will. Are there still system restore points you could use though?

    NickyM,

just wanted to say, as an amateur, that restoring the whole operating system is a LOT quicker than trying to work out how to rectify, in a lot of cases.

You will be up&running within the hour.

Its a good option if you regularly backed up everything to do a full format first too.

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.

Usually we would just restore but it's not an option now :(

In my personal experience it doesn't even detect viruses (not all of them).

You may have to repair windows (which should keep your files and settings), as mentioned is everything backed up? (something that should be done frequently anyway).

Firstly do you have the Windows CD or a Restore CD? If not, then depending on the laptop (make/model) you should be able to make one.
