My slideshow looks crap on tv

I have just created a slideshow which consists mainly of jpegs around 1meg each with resolution 72 pixels per inch and 2592x1944 pixels in size.
When I view them on my 14 inch portable tv via scart they look terrible.
They appear way better on my tft monitor so I thought that maybe a hd screen would be the solution so I viewed them on my 40" sony bravia but they looked just as bad. I have been using scart cables all this time so I went along and bought an hdmi cable thinking surely this will give me a hd picture and my photos will finally look decent. Of course this did not happen and there was barely any improvement.
This has led me to the conclusion that my photos using an information losing format like jpeg will always look crap on screen unless I up the resolution. Is this safe to assume this or should I be getting better results with a 1meg jpeg photo?

It depends entirely on what you are saying makes them look bad. All PCs look bad fullstop on a normal TV because of the low res of the TV but on your Sony, it should look as good as a monitor. Did you go into the autodetect options on the Bravia to get the contrast, brightness etc right?
Also you need to set the laptop to the native resolution of the Bravia.0 -

This sounds like the most likely cause to me. Check POWERSTRIP software if your laptop doesn't have anything built in, or Windows' facility doesn't cut it.Super geek.0 -
Its the 72 dpi (pixels) Increase to 300 dpi or more0

Won't make any difference...you can't put in information that doesn't exist.0

hmmmmm
What do you use to view them on your tv? If you used a 'scart' then its obviously not the same computer that you use to view through a monitor. It could be whatever device your using is just c*ap!
The jpgs i watch on my Pioneer plasma look VERY good (I use a PS3 to view them). Though theyll never look as sharp as through a computer monitor.:idea:0 -
Initially I used scart to view them on my bravia but over the weekend I bought a hdmi cable which I used to connect with to my hdmi enabled dvd player and there was hardly any improvement. Conor, I did use the hdmi autodetect option but it could find anything even though I can see pictures via this connection. I am wondering if the link is working but not at hdmi resolutions and that I must have missed something. Maybe this is why autodetect could not see it. I have been through the manuals but fail to spot anything that could help.0

but presumably he has the originals and can re-scan / or re-process etc
not many (any?) cameras/scanners have a natural resolution of 72dpi

Ok you all win it won't work, sorry I mentioned it, what do I know, the brain the size of a planet.......
72dpi is the generic pixel width of a normal crt monitor up to the screen size of 15"
96dpi is the generic pixel width of a nornal crt monitor over a screen size 17"
How do they print those pictures on advertising hordings then use a very large digital camera ?
A 2592x1944 pixel photo does not make a 1mb picture file. A 2592 X 1944 is 5,038,848 bytes and that for (area) or single colour only, multiply that by 24(bit colour) and you get 120,932,352 byte file this is reduced by the jpeg by a factor of about 10 so divide that figure by 10 and you get 12,093,235 byte file or 12Mb that file will by ok to display on any TV, seen from a normal viewing distance.
Thank You, Thank You0 -
Here is the typical info for each jpg when viewed via paintshop
Dimensions 2592x1944
36 inches x 27 inches
Pixels Per Inch 72
Pixel Depth 24/16 million
and the file is 1.01 MB in size
These pictures look perfect on my 17" tft but look much worse when I look at them via scart or hdmi on my 40" Bravia. This can't be entirely due to scaling up in screen size can it? My 14" crt tv is just as good as the Bravia. Does anyone know how to check if the hdmi has been set p correctly?0 -
Im guessing its your dvd player. First and formost its a dvd player ~ the photo part is just a cheap 'bolt on'. If you could borrow a PS3 off someone and connected to your sony via hdmi and 1080i upscaling it would look pretty damn lush
Im still a little fuzzy EXACTLY what your doing though?
When you look at the pics on your pc I assume theyre unchanged in any way? But when you watch on your dvd player is that through the slideshow you created?
Are the 2 the same?
If theyre NOT the same then view the disc you created on your pc. Could be your ACTUAL slideshow isnt too great:idea:0
