replacement coals for gas fire

I have just purchased some generic 'sandstone style' coals for our Magigas gas fire in the lounge. They're made of exactly the same material as the 'own brand' coals and cost 1/4 of the price. I carefully arranged them according to the gas fire instructions and they've been perfectly fine.
There are some good suppliers on EBay

If there happened to be an accident, ie coal rolled out of fire while it had been on, the heat transfered to carpet and started a fire, your house insurance would be void.
Hope this has helped a little advice wise.

Sounds like a worthy successor to the ink jet printer rip off !
I just carefully brush them down and turn the coals around until I get the best looking sides showing.0 -
my daughter keeps taking them off the fire and walking around the house with them.
she gets filthy.
luckily for us it is being ripped out soon...had no idea they were so expensive.
ours is a focal point fire.0 -

Hi,!
I just wondered if you would be able to help,!
My gas fire keeps cutting out an I believe it is the base of the fire that is causing the problem this seems to be a built in insert that you put the coals on top of, i believe this needs replaced but I'm finding it hard to find this online. I also cannot find the manufacture of this fire as this was in when we moved in to the house, the name on the inside of the fire is KPN Holdings ltd.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks0 -
You need a pro to help you diagnose this, not someone from a forum, lives at stake etc, yeah?
Plus
A new thread would be better, I was tempted to comment on the cost (unneccessary) of genuine makers cokes, plus some poor advice, but that isn't your issue.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

I am currently undertaking training for Gas Safe Registration, and whilst by no means an expert, I am worried by this. Living Flame Effect gas fires generally have a safety device called a Vitiation Sensing Device, which automatically shuts down a fire when the Gas/Air mixture is wrong and could be generating deadly Carbon Monoxide. This could be due to a poor flame pattern, caused by badly placed or incorrect coals. You need to have your device serviced by a registered Gas Safe engineer (should cost about £30-35), or if servicing + new coals (if required) is too expensive, it may cheaper to consider replacing the device. I do not wish to worry you, but if you thought the brakes on the car were dodgy, you'd have no qualms about going to get them checked. Please let me know that you've read this.0

Changing a fires coals for coals that are not specified for use on the fire, ( i.e not using the manufacturers specific coals ) is potentially life threatening.
Manufacturers spend vast sums of money, to get the fires passed by the Regulatory bodies and onto sale. Coal layouts are specific for a number of reasons.
1. Good flame picture.
2. To ensure the prodcts of combustion ( Carbon Monoxide) are directed up the flue and away from harm.
A general rule of thumb for gas fires is, any fire whose burner has either sand of what looks like Cat litter in the burner base, can usually use general 'cheap' ceramic coals. If you have a metal ' tube' burner, or a large ceramic block burner, which will have slots in the ceramic block, which will need the manufacturers specific coals.
A lot of the time, for example with Valor, prices quoted are for the whole coal layout set, which is the base, front coal bar and loose coals. It is cheaper just to buy the loose coals as this is what you see falling apart. However if the ceramic base has broken up, you will need this replaced too.
The prices have come down somewhat for valor spares, since Dimplex have taken over, Baxi used to want to make alarge margin on them. It is not the retailer making the money this time folks !
However, moulded colas do cost a lot more to make than the square rough sided ones( which are what you are talking about off ebay) which are just cut from a block of RCF. Thery have to be moulded, compressed, baked and coloured, which all adds cost.
There is no real safety issue with the material used (RCF) . The issue is in the manufacture process , of inhaling large amount of dust. When in the home, you have as much of a safety issue as you have off your toaster, kettle, oven, dishwasher, ALL of which use RCF's in their bodies. It is a good heat/ Insulation material.
Hope this helps, with this thread being brougt back up, there will be some 'Loon' talking about the safety issue, or giving potentially dangerous advise on not using the specific coals for that make.0 -
