replacement coals for gas fire

  • Babs - our coals sound like your mums, a bit tatty and the white showing through. I wouldn't care but I haven't had the fire that long - I think it's been rubbish for what we paid. The ignitor has been faulty almost from the start too and we use one of those sparky things now to light it! I might just look for some of the black magic handyhop mentions.

    Hi TravellingAbuela,
My mam's just had the igniter fixed too. If I try the cheap coals I'll let you know what they're like.
I've also e-mailed Valor to ask how they can justify the price- not expecting much joy though.

  • Thanks Babs. Meanwhile I might send Legend an e-mail requesting a price for replacement coals!!

We have a Legend gas fire and have had the ignitor fixed twice on ours in 4 years it has never worked properly, fortuneatly we don't use it much, the fire has been nothing but trouble since we had it.
  • It's nice to know it's not just us Millie. It's certainly a make I would avoid in future. We got it from a specialist shop and the owner told us it was one of the best fires on the market!!!

Do you have the model number or even better a number prefixed with GC?
    Should be on the dataplate.

Hi Razor I wonder if you would be able to help me also. I need to replace the coals on my fire also and I think its a New World gas fire. It is model NoGRF10001 GCNo32.145.01. I would be extemely grateful if you could point me in the right direction. I will have to get a landlords safety certificate so I'll have to make sure I get the right thing.

I just had a gas fire installed and bought the coals on the internet...they seem fine, now I am worrying that I shouldn't have done this but will worry next winter!

I've seen the coals for sale in sets in Taskers, that's a B&Q type place around Merseyside, don't know if they're in the rest of the country.
Andrew-b. i got a small brass fireguard from Wilkies, to stop your dog rating the fire you should look at them.

  • Hi all,
I work at a fireplace retail shop and can say that the coal sets are very expensive. Prices do range from around £55 - £125 for a complete set...this can include; coal matrix, front coals and loose coals. Depending on each manufacturer the price will very according to the "name/brand".
Considering we sell new gas inset fires from around the £180 mark, it does seem strange as to why the coals are so expensive.

If your coals are just looking tatty, you can get a heat proof black spray that rejuvenates the look of them. Every summer we take ours out, lightly brush them down and then respray them. The average time span of these coals are suppose to be between 7-9 years.

If you want to be really scientific, the coals are made of the same material that is on the space shuttles. This is to reflect the heat when returning from space.:A

If you are wanting to replace your coals and your fire is GC approved, you are suppose to replace with only that particular manufacturers exact coals. If there happened to be an accident, ie coal rolled out of fire while it had been on, the heat transfered to carpet and started a fire, your house insurance would be void.

Hope this has helped a little advice wise.

  • Hi
I was looking for some coals to replace the ones I have on my original fire and I too was amazed at how much I was getting quoted I do not think my fire is worth what some people quoted! I looked on amazon and came across some on there. I was not sure at what size I needed so asked the question to amazon. They recommended I counted how many my fire had and to measure one of the coals on the fire. They then told me which coals I needed. I got 20 coals for just £18 freepost and they arrived the NEXT day and have no complaints at all in fact friends have asked if I have a new fire.
