How many digits has a current account number with Alliance & Leicester?

Hiya,
I've just opened a current account with Alliance & Leicester.
The account number is nine digits long.
However, from my old current account I can only make transfers
to accounts with a maximum number of eight digits.
I guess that I need to drop the first number because the booklet
is saying
"Sort code:
This is six digits long. The first five are 72-50-0.
The sixth digit is the same as the first digit of your
Alliance & Leicester account number"
"Alliance & Leicester account number:
This number is nine digits long and is shown on your welcome
letter."
Can someone confirm that I have to drop the first number from the
left of the nine digit long number to get a eight digit long one?
Thanks,
Oliver

Yes, what you need to do is take the first number from your account number and add it to the end of the sort code, to make a six-numbered sort code. You then use the remaining eight numbers as your account number.

Sort code and account numbers
If you need to quote your sort code and account number for paying money into your current account from an external source (including Direct Debits), please use the following details:- The sort code is 72-50-0x - with 'x' being the 1st digit of your 9 digit account number.
- The remaining 8 digits of your account number should then be used for the account number for the payment into your account.
If your account number is 987654321, the sort code will be 72-50-09. Your 8 digit account number to quote is 87654321.0 -

Thank you! I would have expected to find such kind of information
in the Welcome booklet.
off-topic: a question about correct grammar - which version is
correct?
1. How many digits has the account?
2. How many digits does the account have?
Sorry, I'm not a native speakerSo, did I make a grammar mistake
in the title of this thread?0 -

Heh - I hadn't considered it until you asked. Your English is pretty good.
I'm sure you're aware that there are various ways to basically say the same thing in a particular language. Annoying when you're learning, I know.
#2 sounds better to me. I think #1 is using the passive voice but that would be stylistic rather than any grammatical error.
I would've probably written:
How many digits does an Alliance & Leicester current account number have?0 -

Oliver, the information is readily available in your cheque book on the first page.
On the left hand side of the page in orange is "WHEN YOU TELEPHONE A & L Account No. 123456789" and on the right hand side of the page in blue "WHEN SETTING UP DIRECT DEBITS AND PAYMENTS INTO YOUR ACCOUNT Account No. 23456789 Sort Code 72-50-01" or whatever your number is.0 -
... why A&L couldn't print a full sort number and 8 digit account number on their bank card (like every other bank) is beyond me.0

Not every bank does this. RBS/NatWest only show sort code. HSBC and Yorkshire Bank show account number, but only if you know how to decode the card number!#145 Save £12k in 2016 Challenge: £12,062.62/£12,000.00 Beginning Balance: £5,027.78 CHALLENGE MET

I agree why aren't they the same as other banks. Surely the powers to be can change this so they are the same as all banks. Why are they different in the first place? Also now A & L are owned by Abbey you would think they would be all the same but oh know. Abbey do not recognise any A & L sort codes as being correct. I gave Abbey an A & L sort code to set up a direct debit and they refused to set it up as they didn't recognise the sort code as being correct.
Case of hello right hand I am the left hand is there any way you might know what we are both doing???????0 -

It doesn't take much decoding on HSBC/First Direct Maestro cards. The sort code and account number are clearly seen in the card number if you just drop the 6759 off the beginning. The new Visa Debit cards print the numbers plainly on the front of the card.0 -

Strange...my wife has an Abbey account and we have a joint A&L account. We occasionally maker BACS transfers between the two without any difficulty.
Anyway it will not be long before these two 'banks' plus B&B are all under the Santander umbrella.0
