I agree why aren't they the same as other banks. Surely the powers to be can change this so they are the same as all banks. Why are they different in the first place? Also now A & L are owned by Abbey you would think they would be all the same but oh know.

A & L are NOT owned by Abbey National plc, to give its correct name.
Alliance & Leicester plc is a separate company. They are both owned by Banco Santander.

A&L current accounts were originally National Girobank accounts, set up as the "people's bank" by the Post Office in the 60s/70s and given away by the Tories in the 80s to the then Alliance & Leicester Building Society. So the account numbers were never intended to be part of the commercial banking system but rather part of the postal giro network.

But as you suggest, in due course the account numbers are likely to be standardised when A&L is migrated to el mega computador español.
  • Thanks, this really helped, I've just had the same problem.

All A&L current accounts now use the Santander format which is a standard sort code of :

    09-01-3X

Then an eight digit account number. This is printed on your statement and new Santander debit card if you've recieved one.

If you are still using the old A&L blue card, drop the first digit from the nine digit number at the bottom of the card, and add it to the sort code, your reminaing 8 digits are your account number.

e.g. number on card is 396789878

So your S/C and ac!!!! number are:

    09-01-33

    96789878
